hi guys, i just found out the other day that my headset bearings were rusted at the top and bottom bearings, http://fcdn.mtbr.com/attachments/beginners-corner/850810d1385765377-problem-ritchey-comp-headset-assembly-scott-scale-40-snc02292.jpg like this pic.
i checked with cane creek headset finder and the results gave me the IS40 series. so i purchased http://www.amazon.com/Cane-Creek-Integrated-Complete-Head-Tube/dp/B004JKJU7G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1448159981&sr=8-1&keywords=cane+creek+IS40.
In this note, the cane creek should fit just as recommended right?

That looks like a semi intergrated headset on that bike. You can see the pressed in cups where the headset sits, on an intergrated system the bearings sit directly on the frame further inside the headtube. I would think that is why you are getting the large spaces.
You may be able to get away with putting back the old headset and using the bearings from the new one.
