26" Rim brake rim & spokes for first wheel build?

I'm going to be building my first set of wheels which will need to be 26" to work with v brakes - I'm thinking Deore hubs but would appreciate some guidance on the rim and spokes or is the mavic xc717 the best rim to use? It's for my girlfriends bike, limited off road use and svelte-ish. Thanks in advance.

Find a cheap old v rim and stick it all in a calculator0

I'd recommend DT Comp or ACI double butted spokes. But building a wheelset is not cheap, but options are getting more limited. These are decent for £50:

Thanks for getting back - I realise it's not going to be as cheap as buying a wheelset but it is a skill that I'd like to learn.Look 566

Tartybikes do Sapim DB spokes at a decent price, they were the cheapest I could find (that I was happy to use) when I did my wheel build.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Thanks for the advice - I've ordered Deore hubs and XM317 rims and will get either Sapim or DT Swiss spokes when I've worked out the lengths.Look 566
