Hi All,

I am looking at upgrading my existing 105 groupset with a new 6800 Ultegra groupset on my Scott Addict.

First of all i would like to know if it is easy enough to do at home with minimal tools, particularly with the internal cable routing on the bike. If there are any particular tools that would be worth having, could you please advise. I am a complete novice with when it comes to working on a bicycle but come from a trades background so just want to have everything to hand before I start.

Also the bike is less than a year old and only approx. 2000 miles done so was wondering if you could get away with re-using the existing cabling and just replacing the components?

Thanks in advance
Mark

If what you have now is the 5800 11 speed 105 with the polymer coated cables then you could re-use them, but it would be pretty pointless:

The new groupset will come with new cables anyway.
You'll have to remove the old shifters, so the cables will have to be withdrawn from the frame anyway.
In swapping the shifters you'll likely have to retape the bars, so you may as well fit brand new cable outers while you're at it.
You can sell on the 105 groupset complete with cables; it's barely run in!

Make sure you cut the outers cleanly, and tidy up the cut ends with eg a dremel / grinding wheel then open them up with a pointy thing.

If the BB is still smooth, probably best to leave it in there and keep the new one as a spare (assuming your Addict has a press-fit BB86 shell and you specified the BB71 pressfit BB with your new groupset)
  • Hi Mgorman82, if you go ahead with the upgrade and your 105 is 11 speed I would be interested in buying it off you as an upgrade to the Tiagra on my present winter bike.
You can contact me via the forum or directly on my email address........ robert.white@axxiom.co.uk

If you are upgrading 5800 to 6800 then save your money, you'll notice very little difference. I have both

If it's 56/5700 then good move

Job is easy enough, use the new cables. Swap things over piece by piece. Good learning opportunity

2020 Merida Reacto Disc Ltd - black on black
    2015 CAAD8 105 - very green - stripped to turbo bike

You will find it easier on the Scott's to remove the bottom bracket to get the cables routed through
