Downloading routes onto android phone for an idiot

I hope someone can help. I’m a bit hopeless with technology, and have only just started using ‘proper’ mobile phones having been used to the old Nokias. We’re doing a lot of long rides out and I notice on sites such as Mountain Bike Rider, or Mountain Biking Swindon, there are lots of good routes we’d like to do available for download in the form of, say, a GPX file. I can’t seem to find a way of importing this kind of file onto my phone that would enable me to use it as a sort of ‘satnav’, providing directions as we go. For instance, if I go onto the MBR website, which has loads of free route downloads, I click on the Cheddar Gorge GPS route download, but when I go onto my downloads it says 'can't open file'. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 mini android phone. Is there some kind of biking app I need to use, or something I need to switch on in my phone? I can’t seem to find the answer on the internet. Can anyone help? Many thanks.
