New London Superhighway - what's your view?

I'd have thought cycling through anyway. It's a road isn't it? Do the signs trump the fact that you're generally allowed to be on the road on a bike.
There don't appear to be any live temporary TMOs/TROs restricting cycling here, though it's nigh-on impossible to check, given they only appear to be on display in a locked filing cabinet in a darkened leopard-protected basement loo. I've emailed TfL asking they clarify if it's mandatory or merely 'advisory'."Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"

What's a cycle lane?
So they have officially shut the Blackfriars underpass for cyclists. The signs are out saying no cyclists in the tunnel. If you ask me, underpass is not a tunnel
On a serious note - the alternative route is what - swimming?
heading West to East there is an access tunnel - turn left at the lights then immediate right
Yes, that's where Spectre was filmed? It's blocked by construction now0 -

that underpass (AKA the Tunnel of Death) used to be one of my favourite segments. With the noise of the tipper trucks reverberating back off the wall it was a real incentive to keep th ehammer down and maintain a speed as close to 30mph as possible to stop overtaking. I used to be happy to catch a red at Southwark Bridge.0 -

Here's a pic and a link, I'm not sure I would describe it as simple
from here https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/roads/elephant-and-castleFCN = 40 -
actually, perhaps the best way of describing it is that it will no longer be a roundabout (in which traffic flows one way only i.e. clockwise) it will be be a road that bends around a 270 degree curve that will have traffic flowing clockwise (on the left hand side of the road) and anticlockwise (on the right hand side of the road) :twisted:FCN = 40

As if it wasn't confusing enough, they've printed it in a totally random orientation. When I'm World Dictator, I'm going to lock up anyone who publishes a map where North isn't at the top of the page.Pannier, 120rpm.0 -

Does that mean cyclists can cut across in front of the so called shopping precinct.0 -

No response from TfL, no surprise. No sign of any statutory instrument on the legislation database regarding banning cyclists from this road, even temporarily. Only thing I can find is lots of cabbies getting irate about a few cyclists still cycling through there "Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"

Wouldn't there have to be a prohibition traffic sign (red circle with picture of bike) for it to be an offence to ride through? I would have thought the yellow signs saying in effect 'cyclists go another way' are just advisory.
ETA: Mind you, it might be good advice. The tunnel is never a comfortable place to be in my view and with a contraflow and heavy traffic it's even more noxious.0 -
It's fine. At 30 it's a good workout but it seems now the max speed is 20 which is a gentle pottle. Just ride defensively if you're worried0

I ride through it both ways every day. Nothing to worry about. Just the fumes are pretty brutal in the tunnel as there is no 'one way' traffic keeping it moving through, and the opposing traffic keeps it in there.0

I have ridden through most days (a few nights there have been PSCO Wombles at the west entrance so I have diverted up past the Mermaid theatre) - this morning a taxi took it upon himself to repeatedly honk his horn, drive a few feet behind a few of us, and call out "you shouldn't be in here". As the traffic came to a standstill a Brompton Rider turned back to "have a chat"! (rider was very reasonable and didn't lose his cool - kudos)0 -
Thanks guys. Doesn't sound like there's anything to worry about then (apart from traffic fumes). Will cycle through tomorrow.1938 Hobbs Tandem

So having ridden the new Elephant & castle 2-way scheme all week my view is it is rubbish, honestly these clowns at TFL are really starting to get on my tits with what they've done in. Its a joke, and they have the nerve to say the delays are caused by people getting used to the new layout. LOL, no, the delays are caused by all the extra uneccessary traffic lights that are phased so you meet every one on red (at least this is whats is been like for me going from Newington Butts towards Borough all week). If the brief is to reduce accidents it seems TFL's approach is to stop traffic moving at all, then maybe no one wil get run over. Way to go TFL
I don't like the scheme at Oval/Vauxhall either, no signs, poor surface in places like its not finished, to narrow, no drainage at all, (see Oval's new pond feature every time there is a drop of rain that means cyclists are forced back out into traffic or up on the pavement with the peds).
After all the money spent and delays for months, is that the best they can do? WEAK! In fact this behaviour is tantamount to terrorist activity, I say we petition our MP's to start a carpet bombing campaign on TFL HQ to rid us of this scourge, just be sure0 -

The Oval pond has been fixed, and nearly all the road surface from E&C to Stockwell is now buttery smooth tarmac - I reckon the Oval bit isn't too bad, except for the northbound cycle lane spilling you out into competition with buses pulling in at a stop. The southbound cycle lane works fine though. Maybe a bit slower, but much safer.0 -
Have to agree re Oval - definitely much safer than before even if a bit slower (esp when stuck behind nodders weaving about on the segregated bit) the occasional conflict with buses on emerging at the Northern end excepted. The Soutbound route is also a bit better now you don't have to cross a lane of traffic again to go straight ahead towards Stockwell - only issue seems to be that quite often traffic (usually in the form of buses) clogs up in the left turn, backs up through the junction and then when the lights change they're still sat there blocking the cycle crossing. Occasionally calls for some extreme filtering. That said, there was a ped walking south to north up the cycle lane from the Oval lights last night......
Loving the new road surface I have to say, though you can't now defeat anyone whilst SCR'ing purely by picking the right line between the pot-holes and cracks ;-)CS7

Finally heard back, and as expected it's advisory. Tempted to reply telling them how the sign has resulted in putting cyclists in danger and highlighting some of the tweets from the lowlife cab drivers who seemed to think it made anyone cycling through there fair game to be knocked off.Dear Mr Soze
Thank you for your feedback form dated 24 November 2015 with regards to the ‘no cycling’ sign on the Blackfriars underpass.
I'm sorry for the slight delay in my response. I had passed your enquiry on to our Road Space Management team for comments.
We can confirm that the signage is advisory only. As there is a contraflow within the westbound bore of the Upper Thames Street tunnel, the sign is placed to indicate to cyclists that it is suggested they take an alternative route for safety reasons at the current time.
We are currently on site building the East-West Cycle Superhighway which will improve cycle routes along this corridor. The work is ongoing and the route is expected to open in 2016.
I hope you find this information helpful.
Thank you for taking the time to contact us. Please contact me again if you need any further assistance or if you would prefer to talk to us about this matter, please call us on xxxx.
Kind regards
