Hi

I have a 2013 Giant Defy 3 that came with a 9-speed sora groupset and a FSA tempo crank.
I'm currently in the process of upgrading my groupset to a 11-speed Shimano 105 5800. However, I'm not sure if the crank will work with the new 11-speed groupset... Do I have to change the crank or will the Tempo work with 105 groupset?
If I have to change it, how can I determine what BB and crankset is compatible with my frame?

Thanks,

Your FSA Tempo is a square taper crankset so it will have a threaded square taper bottom bracket fitted like this

Your frame therefore will be able to accept any of the Shimano Hollowtech II external bottom brackets to match up with the 105 5800 chainset you plan to fit. Tiagra, 105, Ultegra or Dura Ace will all be suitable but something like this should be fine

To deal with your first question - the Tempo chainset may work OK with the other 5800 components. Only concern would be the fact that the 11-speed chain is narrower than a 9 speed and the chairing teeth may not work ideally with the narrower chain. Try it and see anyway - nothing will be lost if it doesn't work. If it does you will save the cost of a new 105 5800 chainset
  • Hi,

I upgraded my defy 4 to 105-5800. Have replaced the front and rear mechs, brakes and shifters all with new cables. I left the tempo chainset on to try it and have had no issues at all with the operation of the gears. Compared to the 2300 that was on there before it is an absolute dream!
