um, i'd use a chain measuring tool. about 6 quid or so.
change chain at 0.75% 'stretch', change chain & cassette if chain 'stretch' at 1% or more.

I don't know of a specific length measurement by a chain manufacturer. I go by my chain measurer0 -
Thanks for the reply.
I have the Park Tools chain measuring tool (great piece of kit), but just wasn't sure if the recommended change stretch was 0.5 or 0.75%.0 -
a simple 12" steel ruler is more consistent than smaller measuring tools
in a length of chain, there will be a pair of rivet centres at 12" separation, as the chain wears, this separation increases
when the distance between a pair reaches 12 1/16", it's time to change the chain, beyond this point the wear of the cassette will accelerate, the longer this goes on, the more likely a new chain is to skip on some cogs (the ones you use most)my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
Chains are cheap. If in doubt, buy a new one. Better than guessing and prematurely wearing your chainset and cassette.0
