Used to have a Tricross Sport a few years back but wanted something a little less roady now that I'm older Bought a Spz Crosstrail Sport Disc a few weeks back and now find that I want something bit more off road focused but able to use on road with different tyres Is it worth upgrading forks and brakes etc on the Crosstrail or sell it and go for Rockhopper or something similar?

If you want to go mountain biking then you should buy a mountain bike, sell the specialized and invest in somehing designed for going off road. Also, in general specialized offer poorer value for money compared to other brands such as decathlon, voodoo, calibre and boardman to name a few. For a bit of road riding and mostly mountain biking i would be looking for a Voodoo Bizango or similar - solid bike off road and i used mine with 35mm road bike tyres absolutely fine for the occasional commute before buying a road bike.Framebuilder

Can you post the exact specs (link) so we can see what it's like?-Cube Acid 29" 2013

Is it worth upgrading the components as if I sell now, I'm going to lose £150-£200 anyway?0

It depends on what type of off road riding you wanted to do. The rougher and more technical the trails the more likely you are to need a real mountain bike. The bike you have suits its purpose but cannot be upgraded to being a mountain bike.0

What is the real difference between this and a Rockhopper for example?0

Frame geometry, strength, riding position, suspension, rigidity of parts, possibly axle and headset sizes. You can't upgrade a hybrid to a mountain bike, it's probably closer to a road bike.
The Rockhopper isn't a good buy, it's about 50% more expensive than similar or better bikes from other manufacturers. Specialized aren't really worth buying unless you're spending £2k on a Stumpjumper, Camber or Enduro.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
That is way overpriced. The Rockhopper (model?) is probably overpriced.I don't do smileys.

Sounds like I should ride it until it breaks and then think again!??0

It will be no fun at all off road and will last about two minutes before the wheels bend in half.
I reckon I could snap that frame in under a minute.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -

Nope, i suggest actually Renting a bike for a day or two and riding it off road, that might make you a bit more sure you want to get into the sport. If you really want to do Mountainbiking, I suggest getting a Cube, Giant or Trek Hardtail (doesn't need to be one of those but I definitely would not go for specialized at this price range)-Cube Acid 29" 2013

Not a great Cube fan neither - the cheaper HTs I've tried feel heavy and clumpy.I don't do smileys.

Probably is the answer to the question. That's a perfectly good, if expensive bike, for what you suggest your use will be ie woodland trail, canal paths etc. If you push a lot harder than that, it will, as others suggest, break
If that's the extent of your off road ambitions stick with it its fine. if you want to get more into the rough and tumble. then cut your losses and sell it . I really wouldn't spend a lot trying to upgrade it . "200 quid or so will pick you up a fairly decent second hand bike that's worth investing in for the future. 400 a brand new bike that's much better than the one you have0 -
Many thanks for all of your suggestions, I think I will carrying using it for light trails etc and road use and then see how I feel about things in a few months time0
