Boonen getting out of the saddle in the earlier part of the climb past the church must have flagged up to FC that he was knackered because climbing like that on cobbles isn't efficient at all.
Yes he certainly gapped Boonen very quickly which suggests the well was empty0 -

In the interview after Flanders 2010 Boonen noted he was riding at 50kph after the Muur, and said that for Cancellara to pull out the gap he did by the end he must have been riding 55kph.
Difficult to say any rider is empty if they're riding 50kph.0 -

Fair point, just dropped then0 -
That was the year Holy Dave was leading the chase until the left turn onto the cobbles in Geraadsbergen. Then he went pop spectacularly."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

They were cheering everyone riding past0 -

Ha Ha yes! I was thinking about his "love" of the cobbles the other day when I saw this picture on the home page of David Millar Tours...

Funny story, one of my Clubmate's brothers bought a house in the village just before the Bosberg. In 2011. Worst fan move ever?"In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

didn't Boonen subsequently try and claim his front wheel had slipped at just the point at which Fabu attacked, which is the only reason he won by 1:15 :roll:0 -
one of my favourite memories is from Mendriso. His ITT win was amazing, the support he got from the local crowd must have spurred him on even more. He was in perfect shape for the road race title too and still in contention and looking strong at the end of the race. I think he said he was feeling so good he ended up making mistakes that cost him being the first man to do the double.0

It's footage like that that reminds me why I follow the sport. Great battle between two greats of the sport. You an see Boonen can tell he's getting away when he puts the attach in but just cant match the pace.0 -

His MSR was a great win and one of the best classics in recent years was last years Flanders. Sorry, I know I am repeating what has been posted before.

It's a gap that even Nibali's car door handle would struggle to replicate!0 -

that's a seriously big ask, to be honest. this was around the time when Cancellara was actually able to ride people off his wheel on the flat. by people, I mean proper hardnut classics riders. I read around the time he won MSR, that he always had that ability (think DDRaver put something up or disgruntled goat)... this last year or 2 with 2 spinal injuries I'm surprised he's getting on a bike again. the vuelta this year saw the proper beginning of the end.0
