Rear derailleur problem

The other day I decided to adjust my rear derailleur using the barrel adjuster because my gears felt a bit off. When I turned it anti clockwise, there was no noticeable effect so I ended up completely unscrewing it (a bit stupid of me). Now the threads in the rear derailleur have been cross threaded and I can only screw the barrel adjuster in a turn or so. I can't shift into my largest cog because I can no longer tighten the cable using the barrel adjuster. Would it be worth buying a whole new derailleur (upgrade from tiagra to 105) or is there another way I can fix this? Thanks.

Try threading a bolt of the proper size and thread pitch from the opposite side of the barrel adjuster hole. You may be able to clean up the threads this way. If the adjuster barrel itself is damaged then just get a new one from your LBS or try threading a nut over it to straighten out the threads. A tap and die set would be better of course if you have access to one.0
