Are Sram gear cables interchangeable with Shimano?

I have just put a coated Shimano shifter cable on a Sram red bike and I can feel it rubbing when shifting. The LBS said they are interchangeable is that the case? Are Shimano cables 1.2 wereas Sram are 1.1m?

Cable is compatible.
Look for poorly cut outer with sharp edges or cable end not fully seated in the shifter.
The dura ace cables are slightly thinner than the ultegra ones if you are talking about the gold coloured polymer ones.
If you have not prepared the outers well and there are rub points at the cable ends, then the coating on the inners may get scratched up and seperate for the core causing it to bundle up and cause friction.
Did you route the cable through the rear shifter correctly?0 -
SRAM Red 22 was originally fitted with the Gore Ride On, which look to have been discontinued. The only make I could find that specified 1.1mm was universal here http://www.ashima.com.tw/inner.html I replaced the inner but still feels rough. Will have to search for cable outer set with 1.1 gear shift.
Seen SRAM slick cables but that was unclear as well.0 -

Apologies if you mean't this, but the 1.1mm refers to cable size, not gear 'shift'. For some reason SRAM are narrower (innards of lever gubbins), although some people reckon they can make the 1.2mm cables work ok.
Cheers, John0 -
Standard shimano gear cables fitted my rival 22 shifters easily when I built my new bike up last week, I did put a thin layer of rocknroll superslick grease on them and they shift better than my original sram cables did, I was concerned when I read about the size differance but I needn't of worriedViner

Couple of things.
* Could be that a 1.2mm cable is a snug fit in an outer designed for a 1.1mm cable
* If the older cable was a gore one then it may have shed some of its coating and that is now causing a tight spot.
Either way I'd be tempted to replace the outer as well as the inner (which can be a pain!). If you do this make sure you use a long enough section for the rear loop (the last section before the mech), SRAM setups seem to be very sensitive to this and the recommended loop length looks longer than you see on many bikes.0 -

SRAM front mechs can get tight or draggy pivots.
A quick drop of Triflow or similar on all pivots will help.
Undo the cable from the deraileur and grab it where it leaves the down tube cable stop.
Pull a bit of tension and shift and see if you can feel resistance there. If not then move to behind the BB and do the same.
Small amount of cable grease on BB guide.
Check BB guide has not shifted from its correct position, some are just on with double sided tape.
Look at both outer housing ends by removing end cap and checking for rust.
Rust is additive, so the hole closes up as it rusts, cut the rusty end off and grease end cap before refitting to prevent it happening again.
If the housing is too short to cut off rusty ends then fit new housing.
Use shimano cable grease on the cables.0 -
All SRAM shifters are designed to be used with 1.1mm gear inners; why would anyone fit 1.2 mm as while they may work they're not what it was designed for (9.09% bigger if that helps with the logic)?0

Well SRAM road bike brake/shifters all take 1.1mm I reckon the 1.2mm must be for SRAMs twist grip shifters or some other such MTB flat bar nonsense - or - to cater for shimano market.0
