Nukeproof mega tr 275 frame + am I selfish!?

I got an entry to the ardrock enduro (sport) the other day. The wife jokingly said "I suppose you'll say you need a better bike!?" to which I hopefully said "of course!" To my surprise, she said maybe I should get one now because it could be a while before I can afford it again (we're expecting!) :D

Anyway, I'm keen to get a full sus, I have a Stanton Slackline at the moment. I've been looking and considered my options, I'd love a Transition Scout, but despite the fact I can afford it, i can't help think I'm being selfish as I really should be thinking about the baby above all!!

To keep the cost down I've been looking at the 2014 Nuikeproof frames on CRC, £650 seems pretty reasonable. Does the tr 275 still stack up as a decent buy against the latest offerings? I'm thinking I can use (more or less) all the components I have on the Stanton including the 26" wheels as a temporary step til I feel less selfish! Or will this screw the bike up!?

Or should I stop being a tw*t and think about my offspring instead!!?

  • It's a bit early to be thinking of bikes for your offspring. So in the meantime, wait for Rockmonkey to get here as he's ridden/owned both.

Personally I'd have the Transition :)

Haha, I don't mean buying a bike for the little one just yet. I mean is it selfish to be thinking about buying myself a bike at all right now, or is that just a natural part of being an mtb'er anyway!?

If I can get away with riding the mega as a 26er it shouldn't cost too much once I've sold the Stanton frame

+1 for the Transition,I'm just rattling my brains over a Scout or a Patrol at the moment

You need to man up. You've been given permission and have the funds. Get on with it. Oh, and get the Transition ;)

ok then.... can the transition be run as a 26er to soften the blow a bit? i got an early X fusion slant which won't accept 27.5. and it's the 130-160 travel adjust version so i don't know if that's appropriate anyway!
  • Just go balls deep and get the lot and make the jump to 650b not because its better but because its the standard for future proofing! also if you soften the blow as it were the child will be born and the budget removed!!! nail it in one by far the best option :P

Thr Mega TR is a decent enough bike but it has a low bottom bracket so I wouldn't put 26" wheels, it will handle like a sack of crap and you will be constantly bashing your cranks on the floor.
The Transition is a whole lot better, like I said the Mega is good but the Scout is a bit better in every way which adds up to a much better bike overall. The biggest improvement over the Mega is the rear suspension.

The third option is obviously to look at second hand. We are getting to a point where second generation 650B frames are coming through so those first gen ones are likely to be being sold on by their owners.

A cheaper frame or complete bike that you can then upgrade or adapt to fit your needs might give you the ride you desire within the financial constraints you have.

Also kids are only as expensive as you chose to make them - they don't actually need half the crap people buy them all those brightly coloured play mats and vibrating hammock chairs. Better you have a nice toy than the little nipper who will grow out of it in seconds!
    Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.

I have considered this but it looks to me that decent frames hold their value well, I'm yet to see something that appeals for a good price. But also, I'm a sucker for new stuff, I like to know everything is in tip top condition!

Anyway, I just ordered those Pikes......

Edit*.... I am aware that I just missed out on a bargain NP mega frame on eBay though, dammit

I think so, I was thinking about the Suppressor just so I could keep all my existing components, but I figured it may not make the best all rounder and I can only justify one bike at a time. Wanted to make sure I get it right this time as I'm going to be keeping this one for quite a while!

Got 150mm pikes on order, Rockmonkey after reading your thread I see they can work as they are? Or would you recommend a drop to 140mm?

Just need new wheels now. I've had the same set of Arch ex/pro 2's on my previous bikes and I've had zero issues with practically zero maintenance so I'm planning on sticking with what I know.

They work pretty good at 150mm. Same length as a Fox 140mm anyway

    Cheers for link.

I was thinking of putting some hope enduro wheels on mine but there's probably a better option out there that is lighter weight.

As far as I can tell the arch ex and enduro rims are similar weights and prices, you get different figures depending on where you look.

As far as I'm concerned, I know where I am with arch ex, I've given them some pretty hard thumps against drainage bars and done some clumsy jumping on them and they've not got any dings or loose spokes!
