Clubmans jacket

"When I were a lad" in the late 80's and rode with a couple of clubs in the winter, all the old boys all had a certain type of jacket. It had a shiny windproof chest/front section with warm breathable sleeves and a breathable back. Kind of like a sleeved gilet.
Can you still buy these sort of jackets or are they just out of fashion now?

I bet some trendy place is still selling them but I'd not be buying one myself. They were rubbish and have been surpassed by modern fabric.
  • I use a Sportful Windstopper Gilet. Windstopper material on the front, but breathable over the back. Paired with a long sleeve jersey and it sounds like it is in the same ball park.

That would be the Rapha winter Jersey.

  • I still got my old club one from the late 80's. Its doesn't stand up very well compared to newer stuff. It does keep the wind out and provides a bit of protection from the rain but gets very sweaty because the front and sleeves are like cheap cagoule material. Also it is very noisy as it crinkles.

Sounds like a GoreTex jersey. Companies like Been-Bag used to make loads like that.

Can't think of a single item of cycling kit I wore in the eighties that I would want to wear now...especially those woolly ribbed bean bag tights.

I had one of those jackets, sweaty in the dry, sodden in the rain.

I did have a very nice Alfa Romeo long sleeved top though....

Yeah, I have been considering the Rapha Winter Jersey for some time. However I hate that big reflective Rapha logo on the back which they have put on the new version.
I have had the Classic Softshell for many years, and it's a great jacket, but I find unless it's REALLY cold I get quite sweaty in it.
The Rapha Track Jacket looks like exactly what I am after, it's just that price though...

Its nothing like the Rapha Winter jersey. Thats wool. The old school was some kind of manmade material - which I think was better than the Rapha = once thats wet it stays wet.

The clubmans jacket was more like a jersey but just with nylon windproof patches on the shoulders chest and arms and should be saved for hipsters who value 'looks' over performance.

If it's the same as I'm thinking about they used to be called 'nylon front jackets'. A synthetic knitted jacket with the two front panels covered with an extra layer of thin nylon material. If you want one there should be plenty of second hand ones about, I sold thousands of them in various team colours right up until the mid-90s.
I've still got a couple at the back of the wardrobe. An Ultima one in various shades of blue and Mrs Whoof has a Postabon jacket is a fetching shade of pink.

Ariostea which went on to become Gewiss Balan. Bjarne Riis, 1st ,2nd and 3rd in Fleche Wallonne and all that, those were the days.

By the way does anyone remember when EPO was invented.

I was struggling to get my layers right yesterday. Knew it was too warm for the Gore winstopper softshell, but in baselayer and LS jersey the windchill was cooling my chest too much. I kept putting on my 'emergency' showerproof top but taking it off again when I got too hot. In the end I stuffed it down the front of my jersey like the old school alpine descenders did with a newspaper. Surprisingly effective!

Think I need a jersey with a windstopper front, or maybe just a cheap and cheerful gilet...

Yeah its not full winter round here - too warm, but it was drizzly and very windy yesterday.
I find its easier when its freezing as its simple to put ALL the kit on and you know you're good.

Despite the fallen leaves I'm not entirely convinced it's autumn yet; 16c on Saturday! We're usually having sharp frosts by bonfire night; this weather is decidedly odd...
