Spoke Protector / Guard

Just got some Fulcrum 3.5 wheels for my Giant Defy Composite, but I was surprised to see no spoke protector / guard on the rear wheel. Even the Giant PR2 wheels the Fulcrums replaced had one and I've never had a bike without one. Should one have been provided with the wheels or not?

They are normally only supplied with the factory stock wheels that come with bike. You can buy them, Shimano and Cateye list them IIRC, however if you went into your LBS they will probably have some lying around.
You can manage without one, as your RD low limit screw should be set correctly so that you cannot overshift the chain into the spokes.0 -
