Tech question re: chainring thickness

Am using a Shimano Alivio T4010 48/36/26 104/64bcd designated as 9 speed.
I wish to change the 36t to a 38t and have found that Shimano do a middle 38t ring 104bcd which is designated as 8 speed replacement ring for the Alivio M411.
Does anyone know how an 8 speed chainring differs from a 9 speed or indeed a 10 speed chainring? Are they different thicknesses? If so, is it negligable, could I happily run a 9 speed chain on the above-mentioned 8 speed chainring?
Helpful answers would be greatly appreciated as I don't seem to be able to find much info regarding chainring thickness.

the tooth thickness is the same.
it is only the outer width of the chain that is different."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Thanks, so there is no reason why I can't pop in the 8 speed chainring into the middle of two 9 speed chainrings!0 -
Yes, but other stuff is not specifically designed for the width but works.0
