New bike for beginner

Hi my mountain bike knowledge is fairly limited, having been a road biker for all of my cycling life, however I a wondering what bike people would reccomend for around £1000, I'm going to be moving to scotland soon and would like a bike that will get me round red routes at trail centres and be fun to ride, I know canyon and rose offer good rod bikes for the money but are their mountain bikes any good? Or has anyone else got any bikes they would reccomend, Cheers
