Bar end friction shifter and shimano front mech
Hi,
Looking at bar end (TT) shifter for front mech,.looks like a number of different makes are either friction or can be set as friction. Am I right in thinking that any friction shifter would work with my tiagra front mech? This is for a bar end shifter to be housed in the butt of a drop bar.
Thanks

Don't see why not. I've used a Dura Ace friction shifter with both 105 triple and XT triple front mechs with no problems.0

Not sure about SRAM shifters, but the Shimano bar end shifters will drive any Shimano front mech (triple, double, MTB, road).- - - - - - - - - -

I have a Shimano bar end shifter mounted in the carbon fibre tube on one of these -

- which is quite neat if you prefer the shifter at the top of the bars. The tube is a smaller diameter than handlebars, so I had to remove the sprung wedges from the shifter, then shim it back up to size, which I did with plumbers PTFE tape.0 -

Thanks, I don't suppose you have a pic of that set up?0 -

You've now set me thinking, as this is part of a project to convert flat bar to drop bar for one handed use, I could use that mount to put my existing front shifter on the bar without it getting in the way of my hand if I'm gripping the top bar?0 -
Ok, here's some pictures of my setup. This only originated as a way of using a triple chainset on a frame that had no downtube bosses for a shift lever, and all my ergo-levers are doubles. It works fine. The mount is not the most rigid, it's Ok but was never intended for this purpose. I wouldn't use the lever at the other end of the carbon tube, as it would definitely flex.
I originally did this as a temporary measure, and if I was going to use it all the time, really seriously, I might consider getting a second mount for the other side of the stem for added rigidity.
Hope this helps.

^^^ brilliant, very clever.0

Thanks, Bill, I appreciate you taking the time out to do that. And agree with Chris, it's ingenious0

Glad to help, Alan. Like all these things, it may not suit your exact needs, but it's always useful to add to the melting pot of ideas and you might develop it into something more suitable.0

Yes, it certainly helps with the thinking. As I have a 2 speed tiagra trigger shifter already that works with my front mech, and as a challenge to myself I want to do this as cheap as possible, I am interested in ways of attaching the shifter to the 31.8mm section of bar so I still have room for hands on top bar.
I did a search and found this http://forums.mtbr.com/commuting/installed-trigger-shifters-31-8-drop-bar-today-829347.html0
