Washing my helmet

So I've taken the foamy spongy bits out of my helmet and will be washing them in the washing machine (they'll be in ones of those mesh washing bags so they don't get lost!).

However I also want to give my helmet a good wash. I presume there's no issue with using a mild anti-bacterial cleaner and just washing it in the sink gently?

It's a Kask Mojito so wasn't cheap and I don't want to damage the finish, but equally I don't want sweat to make it pong eventually. I have a cleanliness and hygiene OCD!

Chuck the lot in the washing machine on busy cycle white wash - 60 degrees with some Vanish.

Cool water, hair shampoo and a reasonably soft brush. Give it a soak and a mild scrub. Completely safe. You can buy special cleaners for this or choose from many different mild detergents as well but why bother when you already have some shampoo on hand.

Yeah, just want to use what's already at home. Shampoo and a light scrub sounds like a good idea.

Yeah I might buy a thin cap.

Anyway, I washed the helmet using a liquid detergent in warm water and used a soft brush. Rinsed well and patted dry with a towel. It's now drying properly as I've left it on a clothes airer indoors.

The soft lining strips inside came out nice and fresh after being washed in the washing machine inside a mesh washing bag. I'll attach them back to the helmet once everything is dried properly.

hose/shower it down with plain water, wipe any marks off, leave to dry, do it daily in hot weather, less often as it gets cooler, no need to do any more than that

Yes, indeed. Removing the pads for cleaning can cause them to delaminate and make the velcro less clingy.
20 seconds in the shower and done.

If you've ever had a good ride around Colchester, Aldershit. Alsager or Plymouth then a wire brush and paraffin generally does the job quite well.

LOL at some of the comments.

Anyway, my helmet is all dry now and I've refitted the spongy thing inside it. I found that a good, vigorous polish on the outside of my helmet with Mr Sheen brings out the vibrant colours most splendidly.

I thought about using one of my car polishing products but was worried about any reactions with my skin.
