err, why not get in touch with the club you are thinking of joining and ask them?0

You don't need BC membership to join a club, only if you want to go racing. Silver membership does provide 3rd party liability insurance, but won't cover you for damage to yourself/own kit.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

Most clubs will probably require that you have some sort of 3rd party insurance and BC can supply that. But it is probably better to approach the club you have in mind and ask them what exactly the membership requirements are. My own club offers associate membership with the CTC as a way of obtaining the required cover, but are happy to accept members that have silver or above BC membership (I don't think bronze provides the required level of cover anymore).0

Ask the clubs you want to join what you need to do.
Most clubs will let you come on 2-3 rides without having to join to let you see if you like them, but after that they usually ask you to join to make sure they're covered insurance wise.
More and more clubs also require that you have 3rd party insurance provided by one of the major organisations- BC or CTC (my favoured one), but some combine their club membership with CTC so you don't need to do this. It's a bit of a PITA that clubs have to worry so much about insurance, but that just seems to be the way the UK is going at the moment.
Good luck!0 -

Love the warm friendly welcome and generous advice offered by this site.
Thankfully my club is much more friendly0 -
How can a club stipulate you MUST join after 2 or 3 rides? they ride on public roads, and why do they need insurance? who or what is being covered and against what?0

It is for the club's protection. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -

... but surely that's the best advice. Different clubs have different rules therefore understanding what a specific club requires for membership would be best acquired by sending the club an email rather than receiving a set of random responses from people that don't really know.0 -

i mean the rider needing insurance, if he is a member of a club that is affiliated to BC or CTC then they (club) are covered for 3rd party liability, they d need this anyway if they let non members ride even once or twice.0 -

My club had very low membership cost but demanded riders had BC etc insurance. Maybe some charge more but include cover? Either way, the club has to cover it's rear end.
I would ask a club treasurer to explain as I am just repeating old third hand knowledge. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

The clubs invest time and money putting together and organising the routes and rides. Therefore I don't see it's unreasonable for the club to ask people to join and hand over what is normally a nominal fee for membership, if they are taking advantage of those services.0 -
Definitely best to contact the club and ask them. As above, most will invite you to "try before you buy" and it is worth doing this to see if they are the right cub for you. It took me a couple of attempts to join a club, first one was a bit up itself and very serious, the second one much friendlier and sociable. The insurance makes sense, you can do a lot of damage to people and expensive equipment if you cause an accident while riding in a group. BC offer insurance with their RIDE membership I believe.Bianchi ImpulsoBMC Teammachine SLR02 01Trek Domane AL3“When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race. “ ~H.G.
