Sod marginal gains, I want huge gains, why bother otherwise?
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

  • Marginal gains lol, Its just a sh1t phrase haters use.
Its funny the things haters get away with when hating nice bikes/kit that would not transfer to other things in life.

What exactly are the 'gain's'? Speed? I don't ride a nice bike just to go faster!! I would train harder to do that .....
..... but I would not be on the sh1t heavy bike after I had trained

Of course the 'gains' get less value for money, and I have nothing against 'sweet spots' for value (quite the opposite actually), but there is nothing wrong with going beyond that too.

You do get to a point where it becomes silly, but talk of 'marginal gains' happens way before it should IMO.
    Its subjective anyway.

A bike is an extension of your body in a way other things are not.
Bikes feel different to a point that marginal is far from marginal IMO/IME.

Blimey, can someone call the matron and give him his medication before he ruptures something?

The really amusing thing is that I was trying to say that the lightness thing is something that I embrace. . . while riding my old faithful steel makes me happy too. Happy riding, Trolls or otherwise. :D

No need to call matron, a nurse is more than capable of giving me my meds.
    Besides, matron sounds heavy

5 pages of inconclusivity! If there is such a word. I know guys who go past me on bikes that I would consider heaps. Who cares? Boy I love my 'expensive rigs'. They are such a joy to ride even if some guy/woman passes me like i'm standing still.
FWIW After years of cycling, the thing I have noticed more than anything is the effect of wheels and tyres. My winter bike has entry level Fulcrum's on them with Michelin Pro3's. If I swap my carbon Dura Ace with the same tyres on them, the difference is tangible, immediately.

...and carbon frames are so comfy...and Campag Record is as smooth as a Katie Melua singing 'Wonderful life'...and decent wheels seem to glide and react to every extra half ounce of pedal pressure (which is twice what I can muster)...

I don't give a monkey's what you ride and how heavy or light it is, as long as you enjoy it. I really don't care what kit you wear or how little or how much you spend on a bike, as long as you enjoy it. If you cannot afford a decent bike and you would like one, then you haven't been on ebay or the BR classifieds enough. and circumstances in the future may allow you to buy something better, should you wish.
Ride a Pinarello Dogma or something you pulled out of a skip but either way, you are no better or worse than me - you are just a person on a bike.

Here here!, and to add to that, I don't give a toss whether they enjoy it or not. As long as I enjoy my bikes that is good enough for me.
Rose Xeon CDX 3100, Ultegra Di2 disc (nice weather)
Ribble Gran Fondo, Campagnolo Centaur (winter bike)
    Van Raam 'O' Pair
Land Rover (really nasty weather  )

No it's not, it doesn't grate at all.

Decent bikes are definitely toys (unless you're a pro or a cycle courier or something). What else are they?

    Expensive and shiny toys, mind.

    What a load of bollox!
Decent bikes are no more 'toys' than mediocre ones.

Why would you want to ride a mediocre bike?
When is a bike not a toy then?

The use of the word toy is usually either a jealous insult or a rich person showing off.
In reality a decent bike is just quality rather than mediocre or complete toot!

What else is a toy? A decent watch? A decent TV? A decent Hi-Fi? A decent car?

You're right, decent bikes are no more toys than mediocre bikes... I don't understand your problem.

A bike a ride for fun at the weekend is a toy. Whether it is expensive or cheap. Both of my bikes are toys (one is about twice the price of the other and most non-cyclists would consider both to be massively expensive, although they're both quite mid-range). I take great pride in my bikes (and my skis etc etc).

But don't take my word for it:
    http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/toy

"1.1 An object, especially a gadget or machine, regarded as providing amusement for an adult"

And yes, if I bought a caterham 7 to nail around country lanes on the weekend then that would also be a toy. However my 5 year old corsa is not a toy, it's a means of transport.

Not quite sure that a bikes main/sole purpose or indeed purpose is providing amusement to most people, but if it is for you then you have two toys.

What's all this about only riding at weekends? Why is it fun? Do you laugh while you are cycling? Unclip and hold your legs as far away from the bike as possibly while shouting out weeeeeeeeeee?

A Caterham 7 is defo a toy though!

Are walking boots toys too? Running shoes?

Enjoying something is not the same as being amused by it. My Jalfrezi would be a toy if that were the case.
I did not have it because I wanted/needed sustenance or amusement, it was solely because I enjoyed it.

Anyway, I cannot argue with you all night, I am off out for a pint of toy 8)
  • We don't need to define the word 'amuse' for you as well, do we?
  • Enjoying something is not the same as being amused by it. My Jalfrezi would be a toy if that were the case.

Well, in all my years I've never heard anyone call it a Jalfrezi.

Of course riding my bike is fun - otherwise I wouldn't spend so much of my time doing it! I started riding for fitness but the reason I keep doing it is because it's fun.

Also I ride plenty during the week as well, it was just a figure of speech.

Why so insecure about a harmless term that fits the OED definition? You should take yourself a bit less seriously!

I think it's good that Carbonator is so adamant in defending high end bike ownership, I think you lot are overlooking the fact that it's actually very open minded of him. He only has quite mediocre ones in his signature after all.

My comments are nothing to do with my bikes, but don't take too much notice of the Signature anyway.
It's old and I cannot fit any more text in the field
