  • What's a pinch bolt got to do with it?

The steerer needs to be higher that the top pinch bolt.

But it's all got a bit silly - gone from some reasonably cheap second hand forks to replacing headset, stem, and still finding some reasonably cheap second hand forks.

You are right, the problem I'm having is all half decent used forks comes from smaller or new geometry frames and 99% are under 200mm, sort of asking my self the question if all this is worth ? If I was using the bike everyday or at least 2-3 times a week on trails then why not, I would spend 200-300 on forks but at the moment is only every other Sunday so I can't justify spending all that hence 2nd hand market

You need some patience, I have some RS SID's that I bought with a steerer at 215mm.

I have some 100mm Manitou Skareb Elite just waiting a service before selling, not sure how long the steerer is on them but it must be in that ballpark.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
