Hey guys,

What tire do you recommend for use on the Cycleops Fluid 2 trainer? Also how many hours of use can I expect from these tires compared to conventional road tires?

Thanks!

I don't think it matters too much. I have a Blue Schwalbe one that is specifically for the turbo. i also have the Fluid 2. It seems to work well and cost about £16 I think.

Get a turbo specific tyre. Quiter and it will last ages.

Try what you have first. I use normal road tyres on mine and after two winters of heavy use - there isn't a huge amount of wear.

It's OK saying get a turbo tyre, but are you using the same bike as you will be riding outside through winter? If you are do you have a spare rear wheel? If not then I would seriously consider whether you fancy changing your rear tyre over every time you want change use of the bike. I know I certainly wouldn't!
  • As said above, getting a trainer tyre isn't really practical unless you also get a spare rear wheel to mount it on. Wheel change in itself is a bit of a faff but at least it's only 2 minutes rather than much longer for a tyre change. Personally I try and plan ahead so that if I know my next ride is going to be on the turbo I'll swap the turbo wheel on before I put my bike away after a ride outside, saves on the faff next time.

Plus as long as the tyre is slick there's some experiments which show that normal road tyres can be quieter than trainer tyres, they will wear out quicker however the most economic thing to do is to use any old tyre you may have lying around, or if you're going to be replacing your outside tyres with new, then use the old one as a trainer tyre.

But a proper trainer tyre should last a good long while, they are fairly tough too. I had a Tacx one mounted to a spare wheel and it spent two years in the shed, dragged it out, pumped it up and it's working nicely!

Grab a spare wheel and cheap cassette to put it on if you haven't got one as people said. Should come in at about £60 for both if you look around.

£60 to save how much on tyres ?

Some trainers are fine with tyres.

Takes two minutes to change the tyre and tube. Seriously, considering this is an active hobby, there are some ridiculously lazy cyclists on here.

Post a video on here on how you change a road tyre and tube in 2 minutes please, I'd love to know your secrets!

Depends, it's practical for me as one bike sits on the turbo for 1/3 of the year and I'd ruin a good £30 tyre on it every year so it's paid for itself easily.

...swapping a wheel is way quicker than swapping a tyre for most people too, takes what, 15 seconds?

    Hahaha +1!

I suspect Grill was indulging in hyperbole, but for someone who regularly calls people out on all manner of issues, I'm not giving you the benefit of the doubt.

I think some trainers wear out tyres quicker than others. I don't generally bother changing mine on my Jet fluid Pro and don't suffer much wear at all, I think because it generates very little heat (probably because I don't generate much power!) I used to have an Elite Crone Elastogel and although it was a decent enough trainer it used to get a lot hotter and used to leave a black tread residue on the roller, something the JFP doesnt at all.

GCN chopper does it in 1:53 and that's with checking the tyre for debris (unnecessary). https://youtube.com/watch?v=ewPeojRSa0k.

I can do it as quick without issue. Most people who have changed a few dozen tubes can. Hardly rocket science.

Well I can't do it that fast, not sure if it's the tyre I'm using but it's bloody hard getting the last bit of tyre back on the rim.

I think it's a bit unfair to call people lazy too - I've hardly got time to get on my bike or turbo trainer so I won't be spending the 10 minutes extra it will take me to change the tyre over.
