Looks a decent route, bit more balanced than some of the mountain feasts of previous years. Seem to have taken a leaf out of the ASO book for shorter, punchier mountain stages and a few flat stages with a steep climb thrown in near the end. Not sure how passable the Bonette will be in late May, could be time to get the snow ploughs on standby. Can see Dumoulin doing well on this.0

As it says in the report, one of the days is doing the route of the Maratona.
Its nice that the Giro sees it fit to acknowledge its 30th Anniversary.Top Ten finisher - PTP Tour of Britain 20160 -
A horrid route. Far fewer mountains, yet still totally back loaded.
All the profiles are up on Steephill:

This being categorised as a medium mountain stage:

To a certain extent Giri are always going to be backloaded with mountains, thanks to Italy's topography and the finish in a northern city. Nothing wrong with that. They're taking the mick if that stage is being described as a medium mountain one though. Think you're being a bit harsh overall though - it's a good mix of long and short stages, high mountains and rolling ones, and a nice detour in to France and Friuli for a change.0 -
Yes, that stage has been given medium mountain status.
I'd prefer to see a couple of more punchy, rolling hill finishes.
.
I'm not a huge fan of these mega long, high Alpine stages at the best of times.
May, is hardly the best of times to try and copy a typical Tour route.
Again, the RCS has gambled, not once, but twice, on being able to get over +2700 metres cols in very early Summer."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
I guess that the weather may be one reason the mountains are loaded towards the end of the race though. I can sympathise with the organisers - if they don't put high mountains in people will claim it's not a classic route but at that time of year putting them in is always a gamble.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0

The sterrato climb to Arezzo looks interesting, as does the Maratona stage. Medium mountains in the middle of the race look a bit 'middle', but then that may help keep the GC close longer.
The stages over the Agnel and Bonnette will be impressive, but probably not produce the most spectacular racing. If they'll be open
Not much super steep stuff this year.
The ITT through the vineyards seems a thing, doesn't it?0 -
Ideal, see it all in seconds link for those with no time to spare on SSR's. :P

Do we think this is good for Dumoulin or not?0

In that case ride the tour for 13 days and sod off...
Or have a tilt at the Giro then focus on Rio.0
