Something broke within my 105 shifter yesterday towards the end of a long ride leaving me with a single speed for the last 12 miles. It was the right hand shifter. Is this a common thing and are they repairable?? I don't know the extent of the damage as I haven't had time to get it off the bike yet to investigate

It could well be the gear cable snapped inside the shifter; that is very common. If you're lucky it will have snapped in a gear which still enables you to retrieve the nipple and any strands of wire and install a new one. Don't go trying the shift levers in an attempt to fix it until you've got the remains out.

I have experience only with the older 5600 shifters with the exposed gear cable; hopefully somebody who knows about 5700 / under bar tape routing will be along in a mo...

That's a possibilty, I'll check when I get back later. Hopefully that is the case

I hope so too because the other possibility is that the ratchet's broken. That happened with my LH shifter, and then it's curtains really. Fortunately I bagged a used one on Ebay for £23. The alternative was a new pair for £100+
  • Ribble are selling both for £95 but I'm quite tempted to just upgrade to Ultegra 11 speed anyway so it won't be the end of the world if it is broken

Just make sure your rear wheel is 11 speed compatible or budget to replace that too...

I only built the wheels earlier this year so it is 11 speed compatible.

You may need a new rear mech as well for 11sp. I believe the pull ratio is different.

You're correct, but I'd assumed he meant buying the whole groupset...

It could well be the cable snapping in the shifter. I had this happen a while back and ended up stuck in one gear (which was not ideal as i had a very hilly return home to contend with).

If the cable hasn't snapped then it could well be the shifter. IIRC shimano parts have a two year warranty, so, if under 2 years old, get in touch with where you bought the bike/shifter and see what they say.

    Hope you get it sorted.
  • Top diagnosis people! Snapped cable. Trouble was it was stuck in the shifter so took a bit of pulling at a couple of strands of frayed cable and then I had to remove the shifter and unscrew the panel on the other side to move the barrel around. Got it out now though and now I need to order some new cables!

    Excellent news.
Always worth having a quick glance at the cable inside the shifters every now and again to see if its frayed.
