I do think the OP has a point in that some people feel they "should" be using clipless when they really need to master basic bike control first. He does make a lot of other assumptions about the attitudes of others which I don't agree with and I think people move to clipless because they believe there are positive reasons to do so rather than to gain the approbation of others but I do agree that flats are an appropriate option for some.

Where is this stuff you researched about it being Taboo to use flats?
Why did you 'research' it in the first place?

How did you get into conversations with all those 'terrified riders' that 'told you' they had been using them for ages?
What else was said in your conversations with them all?

How do you see people giving you funny looks when you 'fly' past them?
Do people really give 'funny looks' even if you did see them?

Why do you assume its the pedals that are attracting the funny looks?

A major benefit of not using clipless pedals is that you can sit facing backwards on your bike!

Actually the OP could be onto the next evolution of marginal gains, if he is faster than everyone while using flats...you could combine it with being much faster than everyone while on a shopping bike, being faster than everyone while wearing normal clothes etc..

This is a fun thread, but there's no way you'll find me posting on it and risking abuse from others.
    FAIL!
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Is this the same as the people who getting sucked in and submit like sheep by:

Riding a racing bike when they will never do a race in their life.

Buying a bike with a double chainset and having to walk up hill because the gear is too big (I passed at least 6 people pushing their 'race' bikes up Winchcombe Hill near Cheltenham yesterday).

Buy a bike without mudguards and riding with a wet ass.

Wearing a helmet because it makes them safe.

Personally I ride what I want and couldn't care less what everyone else does.

    What a load of twaddle!
Sounds like you care very much (and are hideously bothered by) what other people do lol

Maybe you and the OP could get 2 for 1 on some therapy, or a chip removal operation.

For your information I ride a race bike but don't ever plan to race it. I ride a bike with a double chainset, I ride a bike without mudguards, I almost always wear a helmet. I do so because that's what I want to do. I choose these examples as I thought that OP and others might recognise that they also do some of these things and do so because it was their choice rather than they were following some trend like sheep. You have clearly misunderstood this.

With regards to the OP 'research' Mrs Whoof rides a number of road bikes with flat pedals and has done so for years. I have never know anyone to make any comment or look at her in a strange way.

    Exactly (re last comment)

As to the other stuff, I cannot really understand what I am not told.
The comments are still twaddle but guess we just agree on that a little more and the OP will have to find someone else for the 2 for 1 offers.

You still call it a 'race bike' though. I prefer the more recent term 'road bike' as it then only becomes a race bike if you race it.

And a helmet makes you feel safer, rather than safe (if indeed its either)

People are sheep/lemmings, and I 100% agree its very annoying, but given that all the examples are things that most people eventually chose to do says more about the sheep caller than the sheep IMO!

    It's very simple.

I would drive a nail through my feet if it meant I could wear a pair or sidis. They are lovely.

It sounds like the OP is more bothered about other cyclists riding clipless, than other cyclists would be bothered about him riding with flats. I might be wrong but it sounds like if he sees someone clipped-in he would sprint to pass them to 'prove' to them or himself that there is no need to ride clipless.

    Evening all,

I've been doing some research lately about clipless vs flats it seems as though it is a taboo to have flats on a road bike but ok to have them on any other bike. What is the issue with having flats on a road bike? At the end of the day its all about personal preference I have seen so many riders who are using clipless pedals and they say they have been using them for ages but they look terrified when they are using them. Its a shame really that you can get so sucked into a sport that you submit to having to follow the sheep and do as everyone else does. Yes we all know that using clipless has its benefits but why should people put themselves through the mental torture and anxiety of learning to use clipless pedals if they don't want to use the buggering things. I'll admit I don't use them on my Bianchi I use a touring pedal (SHOCK HORROR....SACRILEGE!!) and the amount of funny looks i get of other riders is ridiculous especially when i come flying past them. At the end of the day its all about what you are comfortable with if you use clipless straps flats whatever it shouldn't be frowned upon. Just think what did they uses before straps come in? FLATS!

I wear clipless and I'd drop you like a post-curry turd my lad...thus clipless = better.
  • Top class banter gentlemen! I shall rethink my thoughts on clipless haha :lol:

  • Wow, you really have invented a whole conspiracy haven't you? Even my gran could learn to ride with spd's, there's absolutely nothing scary about learning to ride with them. Even look or time cleats release so easily, I can't believe you are seeing all these terrified people riding with them. Perhaps you should try spd's, they are so easy to ride with and I've never met anyone who didn't get on with them.
