The tyre conundrum...

Coincidentally, both the summer bike and the winter bike tyres need to be replaced.
I have run on Michelin's and Conti 25mm's for quite a few years now and fancied a change. I also fancy 28mm's if I can squeeze them in. I did have a pair of cheap Vittoria twin tread's a long while ago and they were horrible but then, they were cheap.
What clincher tyres run the closest to the feeling of tubs?
Who's ridden:
Schwalbe's
Vredestein Fortezza
Vittoria Open Corsa or any Vittoria clinchers for that matter. I like the idea of the Vittoria Pave's but green sidewalls?! they would have to be A+ fro me to purchase them.
Other tyres, like Bontragers etc...
...and can make the direct comparison with the Michelin's and Conti's?

The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Ive run Veloflex Corsa (near identical to the Vittoria Open Corsa - their old Italian factory before they moved to Taiwan) with latex tubes and they feel great - much nicer than Michelin Pro 3 and 4s .
If you're going to run the open tubular style of clinchers, you really need to use latex tubes with them. I would be careful of riding these types of tyres in the winter though.
I've run Schwalbe Ones and would put them nearer the feel of the Michelins that the Veloflexes.0 -
I tend to use Vittoria Open Corsa or Michelin Pros. I wouldn't say Vittorias are much nicer, if pushed I'd take them over the Michelins but any top end clincher rolls and grips well and I don't think there is much between them. I wouldn't use Schwalbes having had a set that bulged and seen others do it too - these were not early model Ultremos so while they may have sorted the problem now I can't see any reason to risk it. Coincidentally Schwalbe have similar problems with their scooter tyres.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0

I'm a big fan of the Open Paves; I now only ride tubs & tubeless, but did several thousand K on them before I switched. Paolo (Ugo Santalucia) thinks they're slow; I disagree, but it is true that they wear fast in the dry. I've also had good results with Schwalbe Ultremo Acqua. I'm now using Schwalbe One tubs; I haven't tried the clincher, but the tub seems (so far) like an excellent all-round tyre.0

Winter Bike: Schwalbe Marathon Supremes (Folding 28c) - These feel absolutely awesome, worth every penny of £70 a set.
Summer Bike: Schwalbe Utremo ZX - Great tyre but short shelf life
Honestly, you don't need tubs unless you are riding CX. Get those Open Corsas though because they look good! Look good = ride fast......0 -

I have ridden latex tubes ever since that Caledonia Etape. Not that it would prevent punctures from carpet tacks but because I was given one after I had used up 2 inner tubes and noticed the difference immediately.
I guess that the benefits of latex inner tubes will be more marked with an 'Open tubular' than a standard clincher?seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

i'd agree with Paolo, they are very grippy in the wet though and whilst not perfect, are a good all weather tyre, jack of all trades and all that but are very susceptible to flint cuts.0 -
Open Pave's are wonderful. The tubs especially so. Probably all in the head but they feel the best I have ridden on. With the proviso they don't last for any length of time due to what seems to be softer rubber that cuts up easily. So if you want durability, not your best choice, comfort and grip they are fantastic.
Good deals on them at present as I think they are discontinuing them. They, Vittoria, say the new Evo Cosrsa CX's will do a better job.0 -
Well, I have just ordered a pair of 27mm Vittoria pave's from Evans. Just hope they fit under the crudcatchers and if it all goes wrong, I won't blame Wiggle, i'll blame PBlakeney.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0

The original 24mm tyres were as wide as 23mm (that was standard) and as high as 25mm for comfort, hence 24mm.
Your 27mm tyres may be 28mm high. And won't fit.

I'll take them off your hands for a fiver a piece.

I've got a 'proper' winter bike, feck off. In fact, I am just going to have a look at it now (again)... When you mean ''proper winter bike", do you mean some steel hand made fabrication with eyelets, 4 gears and a Brooks saddle?
Judging by what you say about then sitting a little higher, It's going to be tight
I currently have 6mm clearance from the current 25mm's that are currently on it, currently. Guaranteed I will have to fiddle with the crudcatchers.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
25mm + 6mm = oooooooo, 31mm.
Can't see your problem myself.
Personally, I have loads of clearance but no, no Brooks saddle. I have considered one but I am not sure if I can be bothered hammering one though. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

25mm + 3mm for extra rubber, which leaves 3mm to fit the damn crudders... Very little room for the crap off the roads.
We shall see and I am looking forward to them already.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

you don't ride a timemachine. currently with 25mm 4000s II tyres i have 2.8 mil rear and 2 mmm front. never had a problem....0 -

Time machine' ?
That is exactly the set up I have at the moment. Is that the clearance you have with the mudguards on? Frame clearances differ wildly, besides, the roads around here are covered with the leftovers from farming activities - especially this time of year.
I have the option of bending the clip for mounting the crudders that sit between the caliper and the frame as it has 4-5mm of 'overhang' for want of a better description.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

There's this thread on the Conti's:

My Gp4000's are suffering from tyre wall wear. If it wasn't for that, they would probably have at least another 500 miles in them. Same as my Michelin's:
The impending Vittoria's are 320tpi, so hopefully they will hold up. No experience personally of the 4 seasons. Perhaps they are a stronger tyre.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
I'm on my second set of GP 4000's without any issues other than general wear.

Sorry my explanation should have been better, my bike is a BMC timemachine TMR01, an aero road bike with no real room for mudguards.0 -
23mm open corsa cx in summer. 25mm Michelin pro4 SC in winter.
CXs are true to size, Michelin's come up BIG.
Both great tyres. Need to invest in Latex tubes for the open corsa cx0 -

Ah, some say the Vittoria sits big. I have latex tubes anyway. I hope you are right :roll:seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

I think that wear looks rather unusual. Unless you spend 75% 0f your rides turning left, it suggests a manufacturing defect to me. I'd send one back to the retailer and complain; you might be pleasantly surprised and get some freebies...0 -
The tyres are probably passed the point of returning them. I did go around the same bend on a particular route where the tarmac is very broken up twice, not loose but rough. The funny thing is, you could argue that it was my rollers or even under-inflation but the other side is perfect and isn't showing the threads.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0

You're right. They fit with the same clearance as the Michelin 25mm's. They did have to arrive after I had been for a pedal, so will report back.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
5 rides on the Vittoria's and so far I am suitably impressed. Also riding them at a higher pressure with no loss of comfort. Nice road noise off them too.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0
