Garmin: What heart rate screens do you display?

I have set up a separate screen to look at heart rate stats on my garmin 520

I had wanted it to show me %time spent in each zone but it simply shows elapsed time in each zone I think which is ok but less ideal.

What stats do others configure their garmins to show?

From my experience too many things can affect heartrate making it difficult to rely on it for effective training.
So tend to only display the current heartrate.

I have mine to show HR Zone and %max. I have %max set to my LTHR and not my absolute max HR though.
  • Just use it to see the current HR. Its a good pacing tool to make sure I dont go over the top too soon into the ride.

I use the strava premium to see time spent in each zone. But those stats dont mean anything.

If you don't have access to powereters then training with HR is the next best thing and knowing how much time spent in a specific zone is important.

I used to train concentrating on heartrate zones. However I soon began to realise that so many variables can affect heartrate. Things such as caffeine, stress, lack of sleep, etc can really affect hr and distort hr training zones.
This said, if you don't have a power meter then hr can definitely be a useful training guide. I just wouldn't rely on it 100%.

My 810 shows this HR detail.

I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Just current heart rate whilst out riding - I've actually placed it on the main screen (along with cadence) and removed the current time to make space.

Garmin Connect then gives you a little bit more info after you've uploaded your ride stats (% of max and Zones).

I have a Garmin Touring Plus. I just display current HR, speed and distance. I'm not training or using HR zones though, that's just the things I like to keep an eye on.

Oh and the time is displayed as a smaller screen at the bottom, which is also handy.

I have one screen with current speed, cadence and hr. I have another screen with distance, average speed, average cadence and various other things. I don't really look at average hr when riding.

FWIW I found training with hr pretty effective, I can't justify a powermeter or I'd have one though.

Unfortunately without power you don't know how much time you spent in zone as your heart rate will raise even if you stay at exactly the same power zone. Therefore if you stay in the same heart rate zone you are actually doing less work as the power will drop off.
