I'm not sure if what I want is unusual or so common that its never mentioned. I want a GPS that can show me current speed, average speed, distance and time while I'm on the ride. Actual navigation would be nice but secondary.
Can anyone recommend one?

I believe any garmin bike computer could do this. My Garmin 705 allows me to choose what fields are displayed. I expect the 500 will do the same.
Intent on Cycling Commuting on a budget, but keep on breaking/crashing/finding nice stuff to buy.

Edge 20 or 25 sound like to be what your after, a basic GPS computer.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Garmin Edge 200 doesn't do it. Or rather, there is nothing in the manual about what is displayed live. Yes, they all tell you what you did at the end but i want to see it ALL during the ride.
    Current speed,
    Ave speed,
    distance,
    time.

Looks like the 200 is more limited than I thought, but you can choose what you want:

he Edge 200 displays four data fields when you have started an activity. The top three fields (Speed, Distance and Time) are locked in place and cannot be changed. The bottom field can be changed to one of three other fields by pressing the page button (lower left hand button) or having the Auto Scroll feature turned on. The fields will rotate to show Average Speed, Ascent and Calories. The Auto Scroll feature can be found in the Settings menu

Ha! how about that. Thanks. I'll get around to looking at one with maps later. Maybe when the price comes down.
