A slightly strange weight loss question

I have recently lost a bit of weight, i was about 91kg at the start of July and i'm now about 71kg.
but the thing i have noticed is the road surfaces are having a much bigger impact on me than they used to. The same roads feel like they are trying to shake the muscle from my bones!
Has anyone else found this?

A bit of weight??! That's 20 kilos! And in 3 months  Very well done!
I lost 8 kilos earlier this year. I notice I have a bit less padding on my @rse now so rough surfaces are more noticeable when pedalling seated. I do feel the benefit of the weight loss when climbing though. And lycra now quite suits me!0 -
yeah, I think the 91kg might have been a bit inflated due to water weight and the time of day I weighed myself. But it is somewhere around that, maybe more like 15 to 18ishwww.conjunctivitis.com - a site for sore eyes0

Well I'm about 5'8 and under 60kg, and yes, some uneven road surfaces round here feel like bloody pave! I was putting it down to having stiffer frames/wheels over the years, but could be from weight loss as well?
So...bigger tyres, or more cake.
Chapeau on the weight loss, btw!0 -
I didn't lose the weight nearly that fast, but I went from about 95 down to 70 in a couple of years and definitely notice the difference. There is a particular patch of road I cycle over a few times a week that has about 50 metres where there have been a few repairs. I didn't really notice it when I started riding and now it bounces me all over the place.0

Have you reduced the tyre pressures you use, esp the rear, in line with your loss of weight?
Tyre manufacturers recommend that you inflate only as much as is required to cause a 15% reduction in tyre-profile height between when you're on the bike and not. If you were correct at 91kg (perhaps 115-120psi on 23mm tyres?), you'll find that at 71kg on the same pressures you'll get vastly less compression/air-cushioning, and your ride will be far harder than if you reduce it to a more appropriate pressure. For 23mm tyres for the rear, 95psi sounds about right to give you the same profile-reduction, but you'll be able to find "recommendation tables" all over the place if you look.Dolan Titanium ADX 2016

actually I haven't lowered the tyre pressure, but now you mention it that does make sense! i might give that a go.www.conjunctivitis.com - a site for sore eyes0

Even so, like the ride difference between a hatchback and a Bentley, you will be bounced around more if you're lighter.0

Heavier guys are quicker on the cobbles, so there you go...
PS: your weight loss is not normal... that's the amount and proportion of weight one expects to shed in one year... have you seen your GP? :roll:left the forum March 20230 -

Well you don't have as much shock absorbing fat for a start!0 -

Nah, I was trying to lose weight, moved about a bit more, ate better and it just came off. Quicker than I expected but I find losing and gaining weight pretty easy, staying at a weight is more tricky though!!www.conjunctivitis.com - a site for sore eyes0 -

Unless you're overemphasising for the thread, that's also something I'd see my GP about.Ben

20 frikkin KG's in that space of time?! here's me trying to get below 65kg's for the past 6 months and I am 67kg's currently @ 5'8".
You're feeling the bumps because you're not half the man you used to be.
Now the back end has lees padding, you can join the legions of 'My saddle's too..."seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

yeah, I do tend to put weight on in a kind of J-Lo way so i guess having less of an 4rse could be the main issue, going to try slightly lower tyre pressure and see if that helps, unfortunately stocked up on 23mm tyres so might have to weight (sic) a while before going for wider ones!www.conjunctivitis.com - a site for sore eyes0 -
as above, lower pressure, on skinny tyres you need to be a bit more careful about avoiding potholes etc.
i'm 79ish at the moment still coming back from injury, 23mm conti gp4000s on the commute bike are nice at 5.5-6bar
btw i once lost weight even faster, norovirus, can't recommend it though, bit violentmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
I'm on the verge of buying some Vittoria Pave 27mm's. That should be cushty. Sell the stock of 23mm tyres CB on here and buy some 28's of some description.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0

I wasn't meaning to pry, but you'd be amazed at how many people don't know what they should see their GP about. If it was all tongue in cheek, then no worries.Ben

That's not a bad shout, I might try some 25s first before selling the others thoughsungod wrote:btw i once lost weight even faster, norovirus, can't recommend it though, bit violent
Bet it made you cycle faster though, nothing like a bit of jet propulsion!!www.conjunctivitis.com - a site for sore eyes0 -
I've lost over 5kg in a day once and I can fluctuate 1-2kg in a couple of hours. Measuring weight loss is really something to do over time. i.e. is it generally coming off, staying the same or generally going on.0

You have kidney failure, definitely kidney failure or dodgy weighing scales.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
Yeah, I can sympathize with that.
I lost 10kg in 10 weeks, - definitely feels like harder work over a rough surface. Biggest difference was resistance to the cold, I feel it a lot more these days.
So.... more clothing kit and a Ti frame with nice wheels.0 -
A Ti frame ?!? :shock:seanoconn - gruagach craic!0

A Ti frame ?!?
Well. yeah, ok, the frame thing might have been a bit excessive. I'll give you that.0 -

If it's an early 90's one, you just might fit a pair of 32mm's and run them at 40psi.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

That'll do the trick. Get a chainsaw and put a cut out in it.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0

I lost nearly 25kg (from 110kg start) over 8 months and I noticed that my a*se was a lot less comfortable initially when the weight came off. I also treated myself to lighter, stiffer wheels as a reward and this compounded the issue. Like folk have already said here I fitted wider tyres and now run at lower pressures and that made a difference. It's a year later and the weight is still off and I no longer notice the extra discomfort unless I'm in the saddle for a long time (5 hours or so)0

160 mile endurance MTB ride climbing just short of 20,000ft - temperature was going between 30 degrees and 12 degrees depending on the altitude. I was properly fecked at the end (it was actually a failed 200 mile 24 hour attempt). The downside of caffeine based additives, is that while they keep you going, you lose a lot of water.
Boxer's, MMA etc trying to make weight can easily drop 8 or 9kg in a day. My 5kg was at least 1-2kg of body fat as a couple of days later I was still down 2.5kg
The 1-2kg was an experiment I did following one of the posts in training and fitness. I weighed myself before a double spin and bodypump session. Same scales - was down 2kg. Its only 2-3 bottle of water.0 -
It was only a joke diy :roll:seanoconn - gruagach craic!0
