Warm s/s baselayers

Having bought armwarmers last spring, I am wearing them most days and they are excellent. However, my base layers (helly Hansen dry stripe short sleeve) are now proving they're not quite up to task and I need something a bit warmer to go under my jerseys, or jackets when it's not quite baltic enough for a l/s base layer (I have plenty of these).

Can anyone recommend warm s/s baselayers (not sleeveless ideally) which are long in the body and tight fitting (i'm 6 ft, 36 chest, 32 waist - basically a twiglet). I'm sure i'm going to hear endura baa baa but would also love to hear alternatives if cheaper.

I also read that mixing natural base layers and synthetic jerseys (and vice versa) is a no no - is that true? All my jerseys are synthetic.

TIA.

At this time of year I prefer the craft extreme base layer to my merino ones.

However, for maximum warmth, you're probably better off going with merino.

Well I mix synthetic base layer / merino mid / synthetic outer a lot of the time in winter and it works well.

Never got on with merino next to the skin; it's warm but doesn't wick very well so you get cold if you have to stop for a mechanical.

Interesting you should ask about SS base layers; I'm considering the same myself. Just about decided on the DHB windslam one, £35 (from Wiggle obv.)

Like the idea of the windproof front / breathable back. So that, SS jersey, gilet and armwarmers for those cold starts, warmer later type autumn rides.

I like Wiggles own merino, http://www.wiggle.com/dhb-merino-short-sleeve-base-layer/ I've no idea how it'd fit you, I'm a 40 chest and wear a medium (tight), so certainly a S or even a XS.

I am tall with a long body and wear the gore bike wear long sleeve ones now. Found they are longer and fit better, if you shop around they can be had for half price or less brand new. Mine cost me £20 a piece.

I find the Altura Thermocool range to be very good. Both the SS and LS options work well, wicking moisture effectively and keeping temps regulated. The tops, when off, look like they are made for little dolls but they stretch well and don't feel tight when on, just snug and well fitted.
  • I have a craft extreme (ss) and it's great, so another vote for Craft.
I'm not sure how well I'll fare when the temperature drops another few degrees to 5 or less.

Craft Active for me - I never need anything warmer than that as a base layer.
