I am thinking of changing the group-set next year on my Cervelo R3 from the current Ultegra 11 speed mechanical to a Sram Red 11 speed group-set.

Would the BB30 bottom bracket for the Sram Red chain-set fit into the BBbright bottom bracket shell without any adaptars. Sorry if the answer is obvious, but all these new standards has left me baffled when it comes to BB's, bring back the old ones no problems then.

Thanks in anticipation.

No, and a BB30 SRAM Red chainset won't fit the R3 in the first place. You need a BBRight/BB386 compatible chainset, or a GXP (24mm) with a Praxis or Rotor adapter. If I were you I'd either go with GXP which keeps it all SRAM Red, avoids the creaking issues with PF30 and also leaves you with an easy resale of the groupset when the next upgrade comes along OR I'd go with a Rotor 3D+ native BBRight chainset in your existing BB, and use Praxis Works rings. Rotor 3D+ will weigh about the same as SRAM Red once you allow for the BB30 to GXP converter. If you're feeling flush, go for the InPower or PowerLT Rotor chainsets and get power metering...

  • Thanks for the replies so far, very informative especially 964 cup.

Sorry I wasn't clearer in the initial post, the bike still has the Rotor chain-set and bottom bracket that come as standard with Cervelos last year.

Keep them, then. There's no material difference between 10- and 11-speed chainrings, and the standard-fit Rotor chainset is a good 'un (even though I think they fit the 3DF, not the 3D+ to R3s these days, which is a little heavier). If you can't put a Red 22 groupset together cheaply without the crank, buy the whole thing and flog the crankset on here (suggest you go for 172.5 52/36 GXP for easiest resale, and sell it with the BB - but others may think BB30 sells better these days). Usually there are bargains to be had buying the groupset bits separately, though - although like Campag SR, the "proper" cassette is madly expensive if you don't buy it as part of the set.
