Flat bar bike for beginner

Any suggestions for a flat barred bike to suit my missus? She hasn't really ridden a bike for any distance before so drop handlebars are a bit too much like the deep end for her at the moment and riding down the road on my road bike confirmed that. Also budget is an issue as she doesn't want to splash out too much early doors.
The good news is she works for a company that uses http://www.sportline.co.uk/ to purchase rental bikes. Means she can get a decent discount on Ridgeback, Genesis, Ridley and Saracen.
Any ideas?

How about the Genesis Borough.

Flat bar but with disc wheels and a hill friendly spread of gearing that should not put off the new adopter.
RRP is £700 but hopefully her contacts can get a decent discount off that figure0 -
That's the one I'd singled out arlowood. Looks like a decent machine although worried it might be a bit weighty.0

Just another option to add into the mix.

I presume she won't be able to get any discount but if you are concerned about the weight of the Genesis Borough, I reckon the London Road, being aluminium alloy will be somewhat lighter.
The reason for my suggestion is that I've recently taken delivery of a drop bar London Road with 11-speed SRAM Rival and Avid BB7 mechanical discs.

This has replaced my steel Genesis Equilibrium Disc and I find it faster and smoother than the Genesis.0
