Travel between Canary Islands

Has anyone ever tried to travel between Gran Canaria and Tenerife with a bike box and luggage? The local airline don't seem so keen on bike boxes, and car rental companies generally don't allow hire cars on the ferries. I know there are bike hire places on the islands, but they become a bit pricey for a longer stay.

Freemotion in Gran Canaria are very cheap for bike hire, in the low EUR 20s per day. I hired a Cannondale Synapse with 34x32 gearing for quite a few days and I simply wouldn't bother taking my own.
