When are the best deals available? Now at the end of the season, January sales or at the start of summer when people have bought new bikes and selling their old kit ?

  • These days it makes no difference. The competition is so fierce that there are offers all year round on pretty much anything. Sometimes you find brand new components and bikes already heavily discounted.

When Ultegra 6800 came out a couple of years back, it was already half price on Ribble...

  • ...with the possible exception of seasonal kit such as clothing and lights, where off season is the best time to buy, stock permitting.
  • At the end of the season shops fell out unfounded stock at discount. If you want a deal then autumn or winter is a good time to buy. If you want the newest model then it is likely not to be discounted so I'd look to buy in sprint so you can use it when the weather starts to improve.

The best idea is to keep an eye on prices and if you can wait for the good deals. Some second hand stuff has only been worn a couple of times but is often a third of its retail price. I wouldn't fancy second hand bibs!!!

Most of the kit i buy new is at least half price, you just have to keep checking. Last seasons kit is also cheaper.

I bought a load of Autumn/winter kit over the summer and it helps if are xs or small as these are the sizes which are usually left and discounted further.

I bought the last two jackets in small which were the last ones.

Aldi bike kit is out on Thursday. Their jackets are good value. Never tried their shorts and longs but I honestly rate their winter jackets as better than the fabled assos 851...

Well well... I once bought an Aldi jacket... the zip failed within a couple of weeks and everything began to collapse soon after. It was never as warm as the Assos or as breathable or as snug fit. On the contrary, the Assos 851 has been in service for almost 5 years now and it's still in one piece. The Assos is particularly good at coping with a wide range of temperature... from -5 to +12 is never out of place, which basically cover 6 months of the year

I have received a Decathlon jacket as a freebie and it's in the same category as the Aldi one... boil in a bag or too cold in the same day, bad fit and poor design... plenty wrong with it

If you're talking about complete bikes then probably now, most of the big names are selling off 2015 stock and if you leave it too long they'll run out of most sizes. For other stuff (clothing, components) I don't think it really matters, just search around for the best deal when you need to buy.

I've always wondered what shops do with bikes or components that are two or more years old ? Surely the must still be a few 2013 / 2014 frames that haven't been sold. Unless they're produced in such low volumes ?

I've seen two-year old bikes popping up at online retailers, usually reduced by a substantial amount but available only in extreme sizes.
  • For clothing online, Winter stuff in the summer and summer stuff in the winter is where the biggest discounts are to be found. The drawback of course is that most of what's left over is only still available because no-one wants it, either because it's horrible, or more often because the only sizes left are at either end of the scale, ie XS or XXXL. But it's always worth having a browse around Wiggle, Evans etc just in case. I bought a very good Castelli winter jacket From Chain Reaction in July (which I hope not to need until at least November) when I spotted it at half price, in my preferred colour, and in medium. I was particularly pleased as shortly after the discount was reduced to 40%.
