XTR m970 shifter issue

So, i bought a bike from eBay - a Santa Cruz Chameleon. Its kitted out with almost full xtr (Slx cranks) and is rather lovely. I decided to strip it down and clean/service everything. When i took the cable out of the 9 speed shifter it looked a little grubby and after a quick YouTube search found there was minimal danger in removing the cover and having a look inside - all looked well. Until i put it back together.....
The trigger shifter is jammed
The thumb shifter moves but its obviously in top gear as it doesnt actually shift anything. I had it into a bike shop yesterday and they guy said he stripped it and found no issue - he just couldn't free it up.
Has anyone seen this problem before and know how to fix it?
