Budget base layers?

I need to ditch my gym t-shirts and wear a proper base layer. I have a couple of cycling jackets and one of them is a thermal one for winter use. So, I need recommendations on base layers that are not too expensive (say, a max of £20). I want to buy a couple for use over the autumn and winter to wear under my jackets.
I've seen loads on eBay but have no idea whether any of them are comfortable.

Have a look at the link elsewhere on this page under the Aldi special buys thread.0

Cheeky merino number would do the job I reckon.

Decathlon B'Twin base layers are excellent, the 'aero' ones are good in the wniter and the cheap (under £10) layers are fine so long as you wash them regularly - they can get a bit pongy otherwise.
Or, look for ski / wintersports baselayers too, same materials generally - the Decathlon (Kipsta?) ones are the same, the fit is maybe a bit baggier but size down. Bizarrely they are a lot cheaper too.0 -
These compression tops make great base layers. https://www.aldi.co.uk/en/specialbuys/thur-24-sep/product-detail/ps/p/mensladies-cycling-compression-base-layer/0

Just make sure they are a tight fit, otherwise the benefit won't be as great.Trainer Road Blog: https://hitthesweetspot.home.blog/

I struggle to get cycling clothing to fit properly. I'm short and very stocky (just 5'6" and with a 46" chest, 36" waist). The 'correct' size would be something like XL but these garments tend to be too long for me. I wish cycling clothing came in short, medium and long lengths rather than just one size for tall, lean people!0 -
A quick update: I popped into my local Sports Direct and picked a few long-sleeved Under Armour Heatgear compression tops for £19.99 each - which was just at my budget. They feel and look good when worn. It's these ones here:

Should be fine, however heatgear is supposedly for hotter weather and coldgear for colder weather, or it could be just a load of marketing nonsense!
