Hello I am looking to get a new MTB. im 6'5 and 18 stone. So I've already came to the conclusion I would benefit from a 29er and know that I will need an XL frame (23 inch).

My options so far are Whyte T-129 RS comes out in a few weeks @ £2,750. Only has 2 inch rear tyres (I was thinking 2.2 like the front would be needed?), would this be suitable :?: My riding will mainly be intermediate trails with gradually looking to try the odd few advanced trails at bike park wales & few routes at forest of dean.
Secondly would 120mm of front travel be adequate for the trails I am looking to do given my weight/height :?:

Second option Is the Trek Fuel EX 9 - 29. Coming in at £3,000.

29er with 23 inch frame. Any thoughts on this?

3rd option Norco revolver 9.2 fs -

Anyone using Norco/opinions on this?

Alternatively if anyone knows of a good 29er which makes a 23 inch frame let me know.

Id ideally like the Whyte with a bigger rear tyre + 140mm forks? Don't know if this is possible or a bike like that? :?:

Any thoughts/help appreciated. Thank you.

  • At 18 stone I would avoid 29ers unless you are very good at building wheels. Big wheels and the longer 29er forks do not cope well with heavier riders.
Your height has nothing to do with which wheel size will be best. There are XL frames with smaller wheels which will work fine.
  • Thanks for the input.
What would you suggest in terms of wheel diameter a 650b?

    Any bikes you would recommend?

    Thanks :)
  • If you're buying new then 650b is the only other option but you might find you still need stiffer wheels.
