Hi guys,
The Shimano XTR M900 on my bike has broke and I'm looking to replace it. Should I get the same XTR M900 8 speed, this time used, or upgrade it. My budget is under £%0, and if it is an upgrade, I'd prefer it to be a XTR. If its not, it should at least be better than the M900 in performance/quality. The bike is a Zasker LE GT All Terra.
Thanks

  • M900 is pretty old now and Shimano trickle down technology. New XTR derailleurs don't come in 8 speed. You would have to go right down to the lowest groupsets to get 8 speed now.
Any use 8 speed XTR derailleurs will be pretty worn out by now. I would consider upgrading to 10 speed. Even more Deore groupsets are better than your old XTR.

A 9 speed derailleur is no different to an 8, you can still get decent XTR in both 8 and 9, I just sold a near perfect M950 (closer visually to an M900) which had only needed new jockey wheels, and now have an M970, I wouldn't say Deore was better in any way.

    Keep an eye on ebay.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • I too am running an M970 and aside from the lack of clutch, it's perfect. Recently swapped it out to go to a Zee 10 speed setup, but the XTR just feels so much sweeter, so I swapped it back on. I'd say go for a 970 if you can, though they do tend to be rather pricey if you can find them

Yep, I have 970, amazing stuff. Really good springs in those things, very light, fantastically made.
