Can anyone tell me if they think this is more than just paint damage. I am told it is just the paint that is cracked but could it be that the paint has cracked as a result of a whack or a crush etc?

    Cheers,
    Steve.

If it is a new frame then you could register it, if it is second hand then email Specialized.

    Whats the frames history?
  • I have no first hand knowledge of the history. I can only go on this reply from the person offering it for sale.

    "Hi There,
I'm going to be very honest with you about this frame. I have a relative who works for the specialized and he's got scheme to buy a brand new discontinued line straight from the factory with discounts ...
So, I did transfer the money to him and he bought it to me and shipped it from United States to UK, when I opened the box the frame was cracked paint as you can see it on pictures...
I've sent the pictures to my relative and them will replace me with a new frame for a really low cost and I was told to keep this frame.
You are more than welcome without commitment to see it before buy".

I'm wary but could be a good buy for around £400.

If that message is verbatim I'd be very wary, it reads very much in the style of Chinese sellers. The areas around the cable entries look a bit rough too.

" and they all lived happily ever after " is missing from the end. All fairy stories end that way.

Barcode under the top tube? What model year is it supposed to be? Surprised to see a threaded BB. I reckon it's fake, and even it if isn't, I wouldn't touch it with that damage (which looks like a bit more than just a paint crack).
  • If I were you, I wouldn't walk away from a deal like that...

    ... I'd run!

Given the cracks on it, and has been pointed out the finish elsewhere isn't great, I wouldn't buy that even if I could be certain it was genuine.

Definitely a fake. As mentioned above, it has a threaded BB, but on a real one it would be an OSBB pressfit (essentially Specialized's own brand BB30).

A quick Google of "Toray T1000 UD Carbon Fiber" brings up a load of Chinese sellers offering them for $450/£300
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Dishonest seller, he is also selling it on gumtree with same photo and description but in the header instead of "grab a bargain" he has (replica).

    https://www.gumtree.com/p/bicycles/new-specialize-s-works-maclaren-carbon-fiber-size-56-replica-/1131120340

I have reported the listing to ebay, 1 poor sod has bid on it
  • Ok guys. Thanks for the input.

I suspect the person who has bid on it may well know what he is buying anyway for the sake of a few hundred quid

    Steve.
