Well there is an uphill finish on this stage - just not sure if there are enough bumps on the course to make a difference. And, if memory serves, Dumoulin took time from everyone but Chaves on similar stages at the beginning of the race
If it rains the cobbles and roundabouts in Avila could be a bit of a problem - but the worst are within the 3km timing zone
That's a five percent climb for a kilometre and it is on cobbled streets - Anyone who knows Avila it is the long hill up beside the medieval walls and would be a great place to watch a bike race from. It is a good cobbled surface from about 2.4 km to around 800m to the finish

As this year's Vuelta draws to a close, we can already cast one eye forward to next year's edition of the race, which director Javier Guillen confirmed this morning will start in Galicia, most likely with a team time trial - "all on tarmac," he stressed

Nice little move by Aru to teach Tom to get the F off his wheel.

All disclaimers relating to *that* era apply, but VDB at Ávila still a thing of stunning aesthetic beauty.

Go my man Machado.
Why bother cheering him on? He'll only win if Astana let him, right? It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.0 -

They have already let the breakaway win. I just need to be entertained by it now.
What I wont do however is call it a heavyweight win.Contador is the Greatest0 -

Alberto Contador’s custom jersey, the one covered with messages of support from fans, is available for purchase now. The many fans who have expressed interest in the Contador Foundation kit can buy it now in specialty shops that carry the Sportful brand, as well as in the best online cycling shops.
Purchases of the jersey, identical to the one Contador has been wearing this year during hard training for his comeback and campaign to win the Vuelta a España, will help to support the charitable initiatives of the Contador Foundation. Part of the profits will go to the fight against stroke, and to promote cycling for young people and as a means of sustainable transportation.

Alberto Contador is training in a new jersey, one that he says is “very special to me and more motivating to me than any other.” The jersey, made by Sportful, bears the logo of the Contador Foundation and is inscribed messages of support sent by fans during the last few months.
Alberto has felt a desire to say thanks to his fans for their warm and unconditional support, so he’s searched out a very special way to that, one that allows him to carry the encouragement of his fans with him at all times. “Your support is helping me to sacrifice even more,” says Alberto, who, with this new jersey, feels more motivated than ever.
The messages have been sent by fans from all over the world to his website, as well as via Twitter and Facebook. They’re printed in four languages – Spanish, English, Italian and French – according to their land of origin. Alberto is especially proud of how much his fans care for him, and wanted to respond in a symbolic manner. “This jersey will make training be not just for me; it will also make it be a way to thank all of you for the great support you’ve given me. Until August 6, when I start riding again,” he says, “this will be my jersey, and it will help me not to train alone.”

6hrs solo over three mountains. Heavyweight. After topping the Tourmalet, Alberto – who arrived to the applause of a large group of fans – said that it had been "a very long, hard day, because we ended up leaving a little late (at noon), and doing a stage like this gets pretty long when you do it solo."
Alberto emphasized that, during the 6+ hours of pedaling, he had "very good memories when I passed each place. I really liked the experience, plus we had good luck with the weather."
Alberto said that he particularly remembered "the attacks that Andy Schleck and I did on the Tourmalet. FLEX´s idea has left me with a great feeling."
Contador said that he felt very well throughout the day, "very comfortable," he said, "even though I knew I had to pace myself, because these are very demanding climbs," and especially because "I only started preparing for the Vuelta a España two weeks ago. But I'm the kind of rider that doesn't lose much form, and even though there were 4,600 vertical meters, I've been able to do pretty well."
About the three mountains that he climbed today, Alberto indicated that, of course, "the Tourmalet is hardest, because it's the final one and because of the number of kilometers, but it's also the most enjoyable, even though the Marie Blanque is also noteworthy."

AG2R's 22 year old Alexis Gougeard is currently leading the race with Machado hurting and is now caught by Moinard, Amador and Monfort. They are about 30 secs behind.Contador is the Greatest0

What a scenery.0

And he does! Very happy for him and very impressive win, going solo there for 30 or so km. Held off Amador, Monfort and Moinard (Machado was there but had no legs to take pulls) for a gap of 40 seconds.
Funnily enough second place was taken by Oliveira who manged to claw his way back solo and then gap the four chasers on the climb.
HUGE win for him personally. One to keep and eye on.Contador is the Greatest0 -
pleased for him - got a nice pedalling style and good against the clock0

getting animated in the GC nowaztecboy0

Boswell is there to support Nieve. No G.
Valverde has 5secs on them and is going 95km/h.
--
Tom D had two Giant doms murdering the cobbles and caught Valverde like he was going backwards.
Tom D then attacked and managed to gain 25m on Aru at 1 km to go.
At the finish fortunately Aru managed to lose only two secs . His lungs must be burning. Impressive from him for a pure climber on a cobbled finish for classics riders.
Everyone else lost quite a bit more time.
Nice move by Tom D there really on a finish that suited him.
Here's hoping that he gets totalled tomorrow.Contador is the Greatest0 -
This is amazing.
What a rider Dumoulin is.0 -
Great finish. Whoever wins tomorrow will truly deserve the jersey. I'm hoping for Dumoulin.0
