You may not have heard of Hamish Bond, but he is a massively gold medalled heavyweight international rower. He's also a pretty handy cyclist for a big lad (listed as 1.89m and 91kg) after training for three 6 minutes rowing races (albeit fast ones) in a week.

I thought this was mildly interesting in the context of the debate about how fast one might reasonably expect the "giant" Dumoulin to be able to climb, though it proves absolutely nothing!

  • Resurrecting the thread a little, <cough> ...

.. he's just come third in the NZ time trial championships (won by Jack Bauer). Looks like he's going to spend some time racing - he came eighth in the Tour of Southland last November too. Dropped his weight down to about 80kgs.

The giant is about the same weight and height as Froome. Only a kg or two in it.

I did the "Abel Tasman Cycle Classic" a few weeks ago at which Hamish Bond and George Bennett, were competing amongst others. He was looking pretty lean then. Went on a 145km solo breakaway at 40km/hr for the win, seems he's a reasonable cyclist!

As a former rower, I also noticed this story a few days ago too.

This guy is a serious athlete: unbeaten in the pairs event since 2009 (that's 69 straight races!), and the second best erg (indoor rowing machine) score of all time. Go to your local gym and get the 500 m split down to 1:38, and then hold that for an HOUR and you get some idea of this guy's engine.

Be interesting how he does and if he does really well, whether that tempts him into cycling. I guess the money at the bottom end of the pro ranks isn't as good as for an Olympic and world record holder rower, even though that money isn't great either.

Having a decent race at the nzcc despite an early crash. Seventeenth in the overall in some challenging conditions.

I see he won the recent NZ TT title.

His average power for the 50 mins, 50 secs, was 450 watts.

91kg ? Froomes weight off Wikipedia is given as 66Kg - which ties in with that nudey shoot he did...

so it seems. except the top guys put out around 480 watts for that duration (historically Cancellara/Martin/Wiggins have all done around this).

Loads of buzz around him on the domestic TT circuit here last year. He spent a couple of months over here in the summer. Consensus was that his bike handling needed a bit of work, and his cda (although pretty good) could be improved - but that he put out some impressive times - especially on the dragstrip courses

    He is a sizeable unit
Fat chopper. Some racing. Some testing. Some crashing.

There is a funny debate on CW about the quality of the field in the NZ champs ( i see the guy who finished second used to ride for ''Breads of Europe - All About Plumbing Cycling Team'', which has to be one of the best team names), but 50mins for 40k over a hilly course in horrible weather can't be knocked.

Nothing more annoying as a skinny cox who cycles than a big heffer in your boat who within 3 weeks starts smashing you on the bike.

I think his current cycling weight is substantially less than his 91kg rowing weight...
