Anyone recommend replacement pads for HY/RD? Preferably based on experience :)

Thanks

  • I use Nukeproof semimetallic from CRC... they seem to be OK

  • Thanks.
That was one quick reply! Every other time you gave me advise it was worth taking so I'll order them now
  • It depends, of course, what you're doing with them. Semi-metallic will last longer but wear your rotors faster and probably not provide as much bite as a good organic pad. IIRC they're a common Shimano fitment so there are plenty of options to choose from - many of which are much of a muchness. Personally I use organic and find Superstars pads serve me well. Ugo would probably rather eat old tyres than recommend Superstars.

Spyre's have the same fitting as HyRds, I fitted a set of these Clarke's semimetallics a month or so back:

I was so impressed that I ordered another three sets.

Of course, part of that might just be that they were replacing some old pads that were completely knackered, but nonetheless I get the distinct impression that the bike can stop on a sixpence now. Excellent bite, haven't had the opportunity to notice if the fade has been improved by the cooling fins on the back...

Also, new rotors are cheap - can't see the point trying to preserve them by using organics etc (unless you have spent a fortune on fancy-dan rotors, which I haven't).

Don't semi metal pads squeal most annoyingly?

And Ice Tec Freeza 99 rotors aren't that cheap.

I can't say I've noticed them being particularly noisy, I've probably just zoned them out.

And those would qualify as fancy-dan rotors, although still cheap compared to the cost of replacing the rims on conventional wheels when the brakes wear them out.

Thanks for your advise. I will give them a go as well as the nukeproof.
