Hi all, seat post on my Specialized Camber keeps dropping on rides, QR is done up pretty tight and I'm reluctant to tighten it anymore incase I damage it - any tips to keep it in place or should I just tighten it up as much as possible??

Thanks

Get some carbon assembly paste and slap that on the seatpost. It's slightly gritty so it helps stop shiny carbon parts sliding about, but it's equally effective on metals.

My alu bike suffered from slippage of the carbon seatpost from new and the bike shop (Epic) sent me a sachet of the stuff FOC and that sorted it completely without having to get all gorilla on the clamp bolt. I've since invested in a pot of it so I can periodically reapply to all the bikes in various places.
  • Do you need the QR facility? If not ditch it and fit a bolt through clamp.

I had the same problem on my GT Avalanche, I was losing loosing 5 - 8 mm on long rides. I never have any need to adjust the seat height, so I fitted a bolt on clamp. No more slippage at all.

It's the standard Specialized clamp that came with the bike, I do adjust it as I can't afford a dropper post yet. Ill try some graphite grease and maybe look a getting an uprated clamp, it feels like the current one will break if I tighten it anymore - any tighter an ill have to hit it to get it to tighten if that makes sense????

Sorry but I think everyone has missed this.

If it is the standard clamp and standard post that came with the bike but it still doesn't clamp. Rather than changing anything my first point of call would be specialized.

Are you sure you are torquing it correct?

Should leave a pressure point mark on your palm from clamping it.

If it does and it still isn't clamping then Specialized have some tolerance issues.

I suspect that graphite grease will make it worse. Graphite grease is not the same as carbon assembly paste which was recommended earlier.
...take your pickelf on your holibobs.... :D

    jeez
  • If you can lube the cam that will help. Also check it is clamping across the pinch point

Seatpost used to slip on my Kinesis with the standard clamp (bolt through) eventually snapped the bolt I had to tighten it so much. I put a Thompson clamp on it and I barely have to nip it up and it holds fine. I wanted a QR when I was doing a bit more off road on it and got a Salsa clamp and again that holds with minimal pressure. Some clamps would seem to be utterly shite.

Don't think they'll say much, same QR they sell with thousands of other bikes. No I'm not sure I'm torquing it correct but 20 years in the motor trade tells me when something is at its limits!!

I'll look at a new QR, any recommendations??

    My Specialised one is superb.

What is at the limit? Because any new QR will have to be tighter. The interface is between seat post and seat tube.
