Chain won't drop onto lower chain guide jockey wheel

My friend's Giant full sus (can't remember model) has 2 rings on the chainset and 2 wheels on the chain guide jockey wheel. Switching up to the top ring the chain shifts nicely into the outside jockey wheel of the chain guide, but when you try shifting to the lower chainring the chain gets caught between the jockey wheels on the chain guide (regardless of which rear gear is selected).
Any ideas how to fix this? Could it just be the position on the chain guide?

Don't think I've ever seen a chain guide that matches that description!
