SKS Raceblade Long 25mm

I had some of the previous version but they wouldn't fit under the brakes on my Scott CR1 with 23mm GP4000S tyres. The metal bracket rubbed against the tyre.
I'm even less hopeful now I've gone up to 25mm.
I managed to fit one 25mm Vittoria Open Pave's under the rear crud but not the front, so had to swap it for a 23mm Michelin I had kicking around. I failed to get the previous MIchelin's (2 x 25mm) under them but they do sit big as someone on here also said.
The clearance is minimal and it sounds like sandpapering wet rocks when you go through some sh1t.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
Bobbinogs wrote:To be fair though, a Cervelo R3 is based on a purebred race bike and therefore not really designed for mudguards and British weather/roads... so I don't think one can blame a mudguard manufacturer for not being able to fully account for that.
It does seem that many British riders want a race level bike with really tight geometry and minimal 'aero' gaps (some not even being able to take 25mm tyres), trendy pressfit BBs and wheels with low lube/open seal ceramic bearings, milled rims and low spoke counts and then moan when the whole package doesn't offer the same durability/repairability as a decent sturdy winter bike with hand built wheels, 28mm tyres and fitted mudguards.
I was caught out when I bought a Spesh Secteur a few years ago as a 'do it all' bike that is advertised as having mudguard eyelets...but the blurb neglected to mention that the brake clearance was so tight that I even struggled to get Cruds working with 23mm tyres, so I never got to use the blinking eyelets for proper guards.
Spot on. I bought a specific bike for commuting & winter rides. Ok, the online store i bought it from did tell me it could fit guards (little did i know that they were in fact talking about raceblades or cruds), nonetheless i decided to keep it as i wanted a bike with a racing geometry. That was my choice and as a result i accept getting covered in cr@p in the winter and rain. Raceblades do provide some protection, especially for those behind (if riding in groups).
Just hope the MK2s are more sturdy than the previous version (had the front bracket snap on a fast descent).
I know all that, I just said they should state min clearance and they are meant for race bikes that dont take regular mudguards. Its a 2008 R3-SL frame that I couldnt sell and actually like so I thought use it as a rust proof winter frame. Someone mentioned the rear guard causing excessive brake wear. I think mudguards generally cause more brake wear after having got through an Archetype rim in one winter using full guards and Swiss Stop greens on a Fratello.Pegoretti

Maybe i could offer a modification service if anyone wants them fixed haha.
since refitting mine i have not actually used the road bike in the last month (or any bike for that matter) but mine are the older style.
Erm...

That's it Fudgey - I want a fight with you at the back of Gregg's in the car park, tomorrow at 9am.
I wont deny that i took inspiration from your thread, however i rived from the outside to make them look neater, so not a direct copy hahaha.
Still, i can come to Gregg's if you still want to buy me a steak bake.My winter bike is exactly the same as my summer bike,,, but dirty...0 -
just fitted the new version of these to my Pinarello Rokh, HED Belgium Plus rims running Michelin 28mms tyres, tight fit and had to bend a few bits here and there but useable. Lets see if the clips break like the last ones.0

Does it mention anywhere what the minimum acceptable clearance between the brakes and tyres is?
No it F**kin doesnt! I bought a set and can only use the the long back guard. Merlin refused to refund as I'd tried to fit them. I told them they should state min clearance. I also told SKS. Crud do. Anyway the front will not fit my Cervelo R3 there is not enough room for the metal bracket. The small back profile had to be cut so short it wasnt worth using. They should design them so that the bracket screws into the back of the brake bolt and supply an appropriate brake bolt. Also its very difficult to remove the back guard from the bracket so not instantly removable as they suggest. I would say you need at least 5mm clearance at the front and even then it will be so close any sh*t will get stuck there. The new Raceblade Pro are the ones I need but not available until end of Jan.
£38 for a back mudguard. Does any body want to buy the front?
I'll take the front off your hands if you think it'll fit my CAAD X? I don't need a rear as I have a rack on the back...Cannondale CAADX Disc 2014 Tiagra - Blue

I transferred my mk1's over to a Colnago CX Zero alloy using 25mm continentals. They went straight on with no issues. I dont use the little extensions, but they would probably go on.
As for the brakes and front mech getting covered in crap, that i agree on and might look into modding them some more tomorrow lunchtime.
Ill let you know what i come up with. (If anything)My winter bike is exactly the same as my summer bike,,, but dirty...0 -

You're back
...about those rivets. Your's point inwards to look good but are more likely to catch a big tyre and dirt.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
You never did buy me that Greggs. Anyway, yes i did rivet downwards, but used a 4mm rivet so its fine. Im running 25s now and still fine.My winter bike is exactly the same as my summer bike,,, but dirty...0

I can't get my Vittoria Open Pave 27mm on sale from Evans Cycle London at half price, hurry soon whilst stocks last on the front with my cruds on. They sit smaller than the Michelins 25mm Pro 3'snow out of stock at Wiggle, place order to get them when they come back into stock.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0

FWIW, it was a fight round the back of Greggs not a turn up and Pinno will buy you a greasy pie event.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0

27mm? Ok i have only used 25mm as mine is a road bike, not an mtb (i dont bother at all with guards on the mtb)
Anyway, i still have a good deal of room on mine but i guess every bike is different.
And fwiw, i cant throw a punch to save my life. So ill let you buy lunch instead. My winter bike is exactly the same as my summer bike,,, but dirty...0 -

How about a compromise: A pie fight?
I feel very insulted. Are you insinuating that my C40 is somehow an MTB because I ride on 27mm's?seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

Hmm... that's what you say. Lunch is off.
BTW, they're lovely tyres.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
Im sure they are, what is the benefit of going wider? Comfort?
Anyway, i have had an idea for the rear guard, we use some very thin but very strong insulation stuff at work, ill see if there is a strip long enough i can cut up and mate to the extension part of the rear guard and run down the seat tube, wider at the bottom to cover the front mech, and also have it so it runs under the brake bridge and attaches to the main rear guard via cable ties etc.
Not sure ill find anything long enough but ill have a look. Will post pics if successful. My winter bike is exactly the same as my summer bike,,, but dirty...0 -

Please do. Interesting idea.
Maybe you could cover the thing in Duct tape and peel it off at the end of a ride.
The benefit of wider tyres?... I feel a debate on the helmet debate scale coming on.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
Ok, the insulation film idea didnt work. But i had an offcut of 45mm square cable trunking lying around so had another idea.. I cut the opening flap off and cut it to fit against the seat tube. Had to space it away from the frame to clear the cable for the front mech, and then found the front mech fouled it when in big ring. So cut a small hole to compensate. Its not pretty, but doesnt look too out of place either. Secured with a cable tie at each end and it seems sturdy enough.
Hoping to get out on the bike tomorrow for a test. Looks like it should keep things a bit cleaner. Im using 25mm continentals, clearance is tight!

Cable ties, bits of plastic, gnarled and salt bitten calipers, remaining bar codes and stickers, rivets, mud, filthy chain, rusty gear cables, filthy bike - a Colnago no less. Are you a relative of the Beverley Hill billies?
Before you 'test' it, perhaps clean it first as you'll never know the difference.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
I have only had this bike 2 weeks, of the 6 times i have used it, 0 have been in the dry.
Done a 50miler on sunday, it was clean before that.
So not rusty or salt bitten, just dirty.
Yes i will finish cleaning it, ran out of time today.
Also the barcode is the frame serial number, so ill leave it there thanks.
My other Colnago AC-R is clean(er) but i fell off it on the 6th of jan and it went back to the shop for a check over, hence buying this one as im training for a couple of sportives soon so needed a bike to train on.My winter bike is exactly the same as my summer bike,,, but dirty...0 -

These guards are a bit rubby and fiddly with my 25mm tyres, and the front front-piece just wouldn't fit as instructed. Clearance is so minimal between my front calliper and tyre that the wheel wouldn't spin with the tab in place.
I solved this by simply flipping the tab upside down so it passes over the calliper (rather than under), where it doesn't interfere with the brake and gives plenty of clearance. I guess this would work with the rear wheel piece, too. Those quick release tabs are anything but, though...0 -
That's the failing of the SKS cruds, its where all the play is and the weakness.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0
