I'm going to go up to the Peak District on Friday to catch stage 6 just wondered if anyone with local knowledge could give me some advice on a route I could take that would catch the race at a couple of good vantage points. Thanks in advance.

A quick look at the ToB site gives spectator info for Stage 6:

  • Grindleford looks a great place to watch:

Have a look at the route map - currently I'm planning to go to Millstone Edge (Fox House to locals) for the KoM, and then scoot across the tops to see the Beeley Moor KoM. As long as they're not too spread out it's do-able. If you want a great atmosphere, I suspect there will be a lot of people on Cromford Hill, which if you go at a reasonable pace straight from Fox House to Cromford should also be achievable but the direct route is more on the busy main roads.

  • I am in Chesterfield. I was thinking of riding out to Hathersage early, following the route to Chatsworth, then cutting across to Beeley and stopping there to wait for the race. How long before the race comes past are you allowed to ride the route?
  • As mentioned above. Millstone Edge / Surprise View, which is near the top of the ascent on Hathersage road has my vote (I cycle these roads most days and that's where I'm going).

Towards the top of the climb there's a long straight section. You'll get a good view of the action coming up and then disappearing. In addition the elevated view across Hathersage and the Hope valley is spectacular. At the top of the ascent - around a sharp bend - the road flattens and becomes straight once again. a few hundred meters on is Surprise View carpark where you can treat yourself to an ice-cream form the van.

Grindleford isn't a very good spectator spot. It's a fast and windy descent down the valley to the village and there's really only a blind bridge at the bottom. Even if you're at the bottom or on the high street you won't see much coming or going - a few blurs at best.

Hathersage would be okay if you prefer to be in a village. The high street is fairly short but it's straight. Expect it'll be busy though.

  • We are planning to watch in Buxton then scoot over to Bakewell via A515, A5270 then on country lanes through Flagg.
The tour takes a much longer route so its easily doable.

I'll be cycling up to Beeley Moor and hopefully be able to see who makes it up the climb first. Then maybe follow the same route (as ToB) back through to Belper/Kilburn. Should be a decent ride.

Not quite sure were we're watching it yet, could well be the col d cromford though and reckon it'll be pretty lively up there too.
May get up to Beeley Moor top if mate finishes work in time.
If race is quick then they estimate 1.15 at Beeley, 1.30 at Cromford, Belper 2.10
40 mins on A6 fom Cromford to Belper to see it twice or down through Wirksworth to catch it at The Railway in Shottle or over top via Alport Heights to catch it at The Hanging Gate in Shottle Gate ?
Whichever I choose I think I'll end up 10 minues too late and breathing out my rrrse !

I'm looking at Middleton, you've got a little bugger of a climb and hopefully the masses will stick to Cromford Hill so it shouldn't be too busy. Then a quick blast out of Wirksworth, through to Aldewasley and down watch them at Belper Mill.

My nearest bit is Gun hill but it's from the easier side, right from the, ahem, gun so may not be best ever :(

Think it'll be busy everywhere up there mate.

I think the race from Cromford Hill back to Belper by the fams is gonna be fun, it'll be lke a mini sportive 10 mile time trial !

We saw it in North Wales om Sunday. Don't forget to take an extra layer - its very chilly waiting round for them (and then they just fly by !)

Saw it at Cromford Hill, raced down to Belper via Alderwasley and caught it at the Talbot and then managed to see Wiggins and his lazy stragglers at Openwoodgate !
    Good day all in all.
