La Vuelta 15 #14 Vitoria / Fuente del Chivo **SPOILERS**
Withdrawals
199 WYNANTS Maarten TLJ DNS
142 DOCKER Mitchell OGE withdrawal
102 CATTANEO Mattia LAM withdrawal
Stage 14 Vitoria / Alto Campoo. Fuente del Chivo
The first of three stages that could change the GC beyond recognition; not the over-the-top brutality of S11 - but much more likely to produce racing.
Its a longer stage at 215km - and it doesn't seem to let off; the only respite is a long descent to the foot of a Cat 1 climb.
The Cat 1 climb looks nasty with some real ramps that the "pure climbers" can jump away on - trouble is with 56km and a special cat MTF will they bother?
The final Especial Category climb looks longer but not so varied and perhaps will allow the grinders to keep in touch with the dancers

Not much racing and not much posting so far....
The break: Alessandro de Marchi (BMC), Salvatore Puccio (Team Sky), José Joaquín Rojas (Movistar), Mikael Chérel (Ag2r-La Mondiale) and Carlos Quintero (Team Colombia).
They've got nearly 10 minutes with 23km to go.Warning No formatter is installed for the format0 -
In the Giro Aru was much better on the long gradual climbs than the very steep stuff. Today is long and gradual0

Should also suit Dumoulin, at a guess.Warning No formatter is installed for the format0 -
Race split to bits on the last few km of the last climb. De Marchi in front, Puccio with a great ride behind. Aru and Quintana have dropped Dumoulin. Literally nothing happened until a couple of km from the line.
Such a shame Froome crashed out, I think he'd have won this Vuelta.0 -
Aru dropped by Purrito and Quintana.0
-
Aru going deep, Quintana, Purrito, Aru, Chavez, Majka just about together with Nieve dangling just behind in the gap0
-
Dumoulin crosses the line around 22s behind Aru.0

Disgusting isn't it, absolutely awful to look at. And people slate Froome for looking ugly on a bike!0 -

With Froome it's ugly, but you know it's efficient. With Aru I'm just amazed he goes forward at all. Urgh.Warning No formatter is installed for the format0 -
Decent final few kms - enjoyed that0

I thought that was a decent finish all up. Though Astana did a lot of work for not very much really. It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.0

Dumoulin will probably be quite pleased to only lose a few seconds here and there with the TT to come.0

What's the TT route like?0 -

Just under 40km. Profile showing a change of elevation of up to about 200m so not flat but not exactly mountainous either. Should suit him really.0 -

Just watched the highlights, found it quite enjoyable really. Nice to see Quintana is doing better.
Looking forward to yesterday and today's stages - still managed to avoid the spoilers0 -
