Frame stiffness test

Does Anyone know how to measure frame stiffness. Couple of friends and I would like to compare our stiffness bike. We want to know who have the stiffer bike. We would also compare the real difference between Aluminum frame and carbone frame.

Unless you are doing this as part of some scientific study, I would just 'get a life' instead. No offence.

Thanks for the info. It is helpfull. Concerning getting a life, We are just crazy engineers where we want to clarify our thoughts.... It stupids but what we are!

If you are engineers, then just stick the frames on a jig and hang weights off them. Surely you would know that already?

Except that, since they already own the bikes, the only meaningful stiffness test would have to be undertaken with them on their actual bikes. A bike that is a noodle to an 18st individual might be over stiff for someone of half that weight..........

We already have couple of old bikes to evaluate stiffness and we would like to know if bike brands are using the same strategy in term of stiffness. Is there big difference in between brands or not? Every brands say that they have the best bike in term of stiffness so we just want to understand what does it exactly meen perfect stiffness. We are pretty sure that they modulate stiffness and we want to know where the bikes are stiff and where the bikes are flex.

There is an Australian magazine called Ride Cycling Review that has included stiffness testing in their bike tests for several years. They do jig tests and on road tests with accelerometers attached to the frame.

Ditto the German Tour magazine. They test frames with a typical German engineering thoroughness.
