Crank and Bottom Bracket Compatibility

I would like to fit an FSA Gossamer Compact crankset to my wifes Bianchi roadbike which currently is fitted with an old square taper crank arrangement.
I understand that the bottom bracket is a 68mm English thread.
For durability I would like to fit a Shimano Hollowtech bottom bracket say Ultegra.
My question is would an FSA Gossamer Compact BB386.Evo fit the Shimano Ultegra bottom bracket or do I have to fit the poorer quality FSA Mega Exo bottom bracket.
Thanks

My understanding is that BB386 EVO uses a 30mm spindle so the Shimano BB (24mm spindle) wouldn't work.

Have you already got the chainset??0 -
If you've already bought the FSA Gossamer chainset then you will probably need something like this rather than a Hollowtech II BB

If you haven't bought the chainset then it might be simpler and cheaper to look out for a Shimano chainset (Tiagra, 105, etc) and use a cheap Hollowtech BB0 -

Nothing wrong with the FSA BB386 Mega Exo? As a PF it's prone to the same issues as PF BB30, but threaded not a problem. You will need the FSA BB386 Mega Exo BB wrench though that are bloody expensive for what they are. It's bigger than the Shimano/GXP tool.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0 -
Have decided to abandon the BB386 FSA Gossamer Crankset as I have just found in my garage an FSA Gossamer Compact cranset. This has a 24mm diameter crank and I therefore assume I can use Shimano Hollowtech bearings egs Ultegra etc
I had forgotton I had this crank so it makes sense to try and use it.
Can anyone confirm I am correct in my thinking.
Memo to self must stop collecting cycling gear !!0 -
As long as the spindle is 24mm dia along it's entire length, then yes, it should be OK with a Shimano BB.
Some FSA spindles, I forget which, step down to 22mm just before the NDS bearing. These can be used with a Shimano BB as long as you fit an adapter to take up the 2mm difference.0 -

FSA 24 mm L+R, SRAM/Truvativ GXP have the 22 mm NDS axle/bearing.0 -

You are of course correct!0
