Do Shimano really dominate that much?

Reading a news article just now (on the Japanese economy) they quoted as an example that 99% of all bikes have a shimano derailleur.

Is that actually true? Anyone know what the market shares for Shim, Sram & Camp are?

If they're talking about bike shaped objects - I'd suspect Shimano would be a lot more dominant than Campag or Sram. As far as I know - thats not their market.

    99% though ? Prob not.
  • 99% of all bikes in the world - or at least those that have gears. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if that's true.

If you drill down to road bikes of purchase price of >£500 then the picture probably looks different.
  • More believable when you think BSOs, MTBs, children's bikes and hybrids probably account for a massive share of bicycle sales and Campag don't cater for them at all. Don't think many people would spec Campag or SRAM on a tourer, either.
  • Of the 7 bikes in my shed, 5 have shimano, 1 has campag and 1 is a fixie. So that sort of confirms the argument.

    Approximately 71.4%, 14.3% & 14.3%?
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.
